Afghanistan Crisis

People and local authorities from across the UK are coming forward to support new arrivals from Afghanistan in response to the heart-breaking catastrophe. Please see our Statement of solidarity and compassion, and statements from Universities of Sanctuary and the CoS UK Local Authority Network.

Campaigns and Actions
Take Action against the #AntiRefugeeBill 
 
The Afghan crisis has exposed the lack of safe routes to sanctuary and cruel nature of the Nationality and Borders Bill. Please see our website which collates the work of partners in the new #TogetherWithRefugees coalition campaign. The website will be updated as soon  as amendments are published and includes links to resources and actions you can take NOW to oppose the Nationality and Borders Bill. Resources include working with MPs and councillors, petitions, template letters, key facts and promoting the orange heart as a symbol of compassion for people seeking sanctuary.  
 
#TogetherWithRefugees we will show the government #WhoWeARe 
      Justice on the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill
        
City of Sanctuary UK has signed the Liberty, Bond, Friends Families and Travellers, Quakers in Britain and Friends of the Earth  joint letter to the Home Secretary and Secretary of State for Justice on the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill.

Supporting organisations in the City of Sanctuary networks are invited to join us in signing the open letter via this short form. Please do share widely with your networks and allies. The statement will be open to sign-on until 3rd September.

Funday Friday Relaunch Party - 3rd Sep 
        
Funday Friday is a cafe style online social space to keep people seeking sanctuary (and those supporting them) connected across the UK. There is a launch party on Friday 3rd September for anyone who wants to come along and find out more.

Practitioners with an interest in refugees’ access to Further and Higher Education in Scotland are invited to join a sociable speed-networking style gathering.   Register here. 
              A Road to Travel: When Universities Welcome Students Seeking Sanctuary 
    
On 15th Sep, STAR, Universities of Sanctuary and Birkbeck, University of London are hosting this screening of the short film 'A Road to Travel' including a panel discussion on the benefits of opening access to higher education for people seeking sanctuary and practical ways of mobilising your institution’s senior management to commit resources and take action. Free tickets available here.
Please share this event with your local universities that perhaps aren't connected to Universities of Sanctuary or don't have scholarships yet.
 Stories of Resilience - Online Launch Event  
        
Stories of Resilience is a UK-wide storytelling project. It celebrates how people seeking sanctuary worked with
grassroots groups and organisations to connect and cope in creative ways during Covid-19. They are holding an online launch event on 29th September. More info here.
Good Neighbours Project        

The Good Neighbours Project is a collaboration between Imix, City of Sanctuary and Reset showcasing daily good news stories of welcome and support in communities all across the UK. Follow on Facebook and please send your stories of welcome and kindness by direct message to the page. 
      Cook & Share Grants  
        
Sharing food is a wonderful way to welcome, break barriers, reduce isolation & bring people together. An activity that meets two of our key network principles to build welcome.  Small grants available for Cook & Share month. Deadline 8th Sept.
      RSC-BIEA Fellowship for refugee / displaced scholars
        
      A tool to help students protect their educational documents
        

Afghan college students and recent graduates can use the UC Davis Article 26 Backpack to keep critical academic and other documents safely and securely stored, shared, and evaluated. This service is free and open to all.
