How do you celebrate Midsummer? Read on for some ideas.

The longest day of the year.

The Summer Solstice (aka Midsummer, or Litha) is one of the four astrological events that many branches of paganism celebrate. It's the longest day of the year, when the Earth's axis (in this case, the north pole) is pointed toward the sun. From our point of view, it appears the sun's movement in the sky pauses for a moment before moving in the opposite direction. Over the spring the sun moves higher and higher in the sky until suddenly it pauses and begins its descent.

The solstices and equinoxes (when the day and night are the same length) are my favorite holidays to celebrate. These are four times each year when we are reminded to take a step back and just be aware of the progress the Earth is making in its orbit.

People choose to celebrate these dates in many different ways. Here are some of my favorite things to do on the Summer Solstice:

  • Spend time outside. Whether you spend time in a conservatory or in the forest, I think it's important to connect with plants and the earth. I usually like to pick a park or cemetery and just walk around. That's it. No agenda, other than mindful connection.
  • Eat seasonal food. Obviously this is relative to where you live, but here is a good website to give you a general overview of what's in season in North America right this moment (there's lots of info there, so click around!).
  • Clean your house. While the solstice is the first day of summer, it's still a great time to do some spring cleaning. Open all your windows and let the air move through your space. Vacuum, dust, do laundry, change your sheets, scrub the tub- whatever you can! And, most importantly, follow up your physical cleaning with some energetic cleaning. Light a smudge stick or some resin incense and waft the fragrant smoke through your space, allowing the smoke to clear away all stagnant energy.
    • This is also a great opportunity to do a little feng shui to freshen your space! Check out this book on the subject, it's my absolute favorite.
  • Set intentions and/or do some magick. Since the summer solstice is when the sun is highest in the sky, this is the time when fiery sun energy is the strongest. Use that energy to your advantage to create a plan for the second half of the year, and add some extra umph to those intentions by casting some spells. Let me be clear, here: Magick is a practice. It is not a religion. You can cast spells regardless of your religion or belief system. Think of a spell as an acted-out vision board. If you're a magick newbie, check out these blog posts I wrote about spell-crafting basics. Magick 101 and Magick 102
Essentially, that's my plan for the solstice, which, by the way, will be on June 20th of this year. If you want to get technical the sun will hit its height in the sky at 22:34 Universal Time (or 5:34 pm EST). I hope that you make some time this month to connect with nature, and the energies of life flowing all around you.

Love,
Nick
