How Independent Testing Saves Money And Releases Your Staff

Many web developers struggle when it comes to testing their own work, missing problems that could be harmful to a company's reputation and sales.

Looking at it another way, why hold your developers back with laborious testing when it would be much more cost effective for them to be working on the next set of development tasks?

Independent testing frees up time for staff to focus on the website's functionality, content, imagery and messages rather than whether it works or not.

For project managers, it frees them up to actually manage their project and team rather than spend unnecessary time testing it.

PureBlue, an ecommerce digital agency, appointed us to test their client projects, so that they don't need to worry about whether the sites work. The PureBlue team are unlocked to focus on the delivery of the website to their client.

PureBlue homepage
PureBlue are a London-based ecommerce development agency specialising in Magento.

As a Magento silver partner, PureBlue are well placed to design, build and support successful ecommerce initiatives.

Of course, testing is a big part of any successful website (we would say that) and that is where we come in. PureBlue approached us to thoroughly test each website build before launch and the results of our testing have allowed PureBlue to deliver great websites for their clients.

By having WebDepend carry out this testing, it has also freed up project managers and other staff at PureBlue to focus on getting aspects of the website absolutely nailed, such as product details, imagery, pricing, shipping options and payment options. Every ecommerce website needs these items but if the project manager is also testing then important details can be overlooked.

Another benefit, not fully realised initially, has been a much lower number of support tasks post launch. The detailed testing that we provide has meant that clients have been submitting far fewer support requests, allowing PureBlue staff members to build stronger client relationships and move onto the next piece of work more quickly.

Ilona Gurcinaite, Project Manager at PureBlue:

"We regularly work with WebDepend on our testing who are an integral part of the service we provide to our clients. They are efficient and responsive and provide a great level of detail which allows us to deliver a bug free platforms to our clients."

How retail marketers can ensure they deliver the ‘right’ customer experience

1. For ecommerce sites, if you are displaying related products on a product page, test that the related products are currently in stock and available for purchase. It is frustrating for the user to click on a suggested product to find that it is out of stock.

2. Also for ecommerce sites, check that the display of the shopping basket page fits on a mobile with a smaller screen, such as an iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 or smaller Android smartphones. We test many ecommerce sites where important details, such as delivery charges and order totals are not visible, as they are positioned off the right-hand side of the screen.

3. The shift towards mobile continues to increase.  If you run an ecommerce site try to carry out a purchase using your mobile phone. Go through the checkout process and note down all the frustrations and difficulties you experience. Are you happy for your customers to have the same experience when they want to buy from you?
