What We've Been Up To

Happy New Year! We hope that all of you and your families had a safe and enjoyable winter break. As you might have noticed, we skipped the last newsletter date, as most of our organizers took a week or two off, for a well-deserved break!

However, we’re back in action and are planning lots of campaigns, social media posts, and potentially some actions, for when it is safe to do so!

Weekly Strikes Are Cancelled Until Further Notice

Due to the continuous rise in COVID-19 cases in Calgary, and the new restrictions put in place by the government, we will not be holding any in person strikes until further notice. We will continue to keep our presence online strong, and we invite you to keep striking digitally with us! Stay tuned!

Webinar on Ecovide and Indigenous Rights

On Tuesday, January 19th, Stop Ecocide Canada, and RAVEN trust will be hosting a webinar, where panelists will be talking about environmental destruction, Indigenous rights, and their correlations. You can register here.

Reconnaissance Africa (RECON AFRICA), a Canadian and American company, has its sights on “exploring” and then almost surely fracking and drilling for oil in Kavango East and West and the environmentally sensitive Okavango basin, in Namibia and Botswana. A coalition of global citizens have created an open letter to all governments of the world, calling upon them to step in and revoke RECON AFRICA’s permission to explore, frack, and drill for oil in the Okavango Delta and Kavango Basin. Show your support by signing the letter.
Prime Minister Trudeau was the recipient of the National Geographic 2020 Planetary Leadership award. Although this is a step in the right direction, we have seen the federal government stand on the sidelines when Indigenous rights and sovereignty are threatened and attacked by fossil fuel companies and continually fall short of international climate goals. It is time for Justin Trudeau to stand with all Nations and communities that are under attack and lead a just transition that focuses on REAL ACTION not empty promises.

Jagmeet Singh and the NDP are calling upon the Canadian Government to Ban the Proud Boys,a right-wing extremist group,  founded in Canada, that participated in the riots at the United States Capitol this past Wednesday, amongst other acts of hatred towards BIPoC, the LGBTQ+ community, those practicing Judaism, and other groups and individuals.
