Fridays for Future Calgary Newsletter - November 16

Welcome to the Fridays For Future Calgary Newsletter! Our newsletter is sent bi-weekly and includes updates from our group, climate and environmental news and ways to take action! If you enjoy this newsletter, tell your friends and family to sign up too!

What We've Been Up To

We didn’t have a strike last Friday, however, we did have a direct action.

Last Thursday, we placed signs reading “Respect Indigenous Rights and Sovereignty”, “You’re on Stolen Land” and “Respect Treaty Rights” outside many constituency offices around so-called “Calgary” to remind our MPs, MLAs and their all those who make their home on Treaty 7 territory that our governments must do more to uplift and support Indigenous communities.  We put out two Instagram posts with more details, you’ll find them in our “In Case You Missed It” section.

Weekly Strikes Are Cancelled Until Further Notice

Due to small turnout and the rise of COVID-19 cases in Calgary, Fridays for Future Calgary has decided to halt our striking for the remainder of November. However, this is certainly not a pause in our activism, we will continue to share resources on social media, amongst other things.

Upcoming Events

  • Email Writing Session
If you’re interested in writing emails to your elected representatives about Indigenous rights or anything climate justice related, Climate Strike Canada will be hosting email writing (or tweeting, if that’s more your style) sessions every other Saturday at 3 pm MST over Zoom. The next one will be on Saturday, November 28th on this Zoom link.

  • Mock COP26
Earlier this year, world leaders postponed COP26 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. So, youth activists are taking matters into their own hands and showing the world what would happen if young people were the decision makers. It will run from November 19th to December 1st. All details can be found on their website. Additionally, if you are able to donate to their crowdfunder, please consider doing so!

On Thursday night last week, a group of youth left signs reading “Respect Indigenous rights and sovereignty” outside many constituency offices around so-called “Calgary” to remind our MPs, MLAs, and their constituents that business cannot continue as usual until Indigenous peoples, their cultures and sovereignty are fully respected. See where we left our signs here.

Good News! On Tuesday night Calgary City Council voted 13 to 1 against approving the 11 new developments here in Calgary!  Thank you to everyone who wrote to and called their councilors to stand up against urban sprawl!
Obviously, this isn’t the end of the urban sprawl and housing disparities in Calgary, but it’s a great first step!

Find out how climate change is affecting our world and what's being done about it.

Typhoon Goni, one of the strongest storms on record barrelled through the south of the Philippines' last week. The storm displaced hundreds of thousands of people and killing at least 16. But a relatively low initial death toll compared with some previous storms could point to improvement in the Phillippines’s disaster response.

Take Action!

Indigenous Rights across so-called Canada are being attacked and the government is failing to act! Climate Strike Canada created random email generators in support of Mi’kmaq fisherfolk, Secwépemc land defenders, Six Nations land defenders, and the Algonquin moose moratorium!

Unique emails are much more likely to be read, and so have a greater impact. Please take a few moments to flood officials’ inboxes with messages demanding they uphold Indigenous sovereignty, and feel free to share widely!
