This Week at St. Alban's

Tuesday, June 3, 2019

Dear all,

In my sermon yesterday, I spoke about Youth Spirit Artworks in south Berkeley.  This organization, which serves 16 - 25 year old youth/young adults who have lived/are living on the streets through arts education, employment and more, is building a tiny house village, the first real home many will have of their own.

They are asking for your support their efforts, especially in getting the City of Berkeley to fund a social worker for the project. The City of Oakland has already pledged over $300,000 to the project. The ask to Berkeley is $74, 000. Please click here for the flyer with information on how to leave a message for council members encouraging their support.

The houses will be built in a series of community builds in August and September. Training is provided. Join me, and learn more here. A prototype of the homes will be visiting St. Alban's in July. Stay tuned!

Former intern Anna Rossi will be ordained to the priesthood this Saturday at 3 pm. Please call the office by Wednesday if you'd like to carpool to Grace Cathedral.

This coming Sunday is Pentecost, and the Spirit is definitely on the move. Feel free to wear red, signifying the fire of the Holy Spirit! (And ponder this week: where is the Spirit's fire alighting in your life these days?)

In love and gratitude,
Rev. Julie

P.S. My sermon from Sunday is here.

Sunday forums on loving the planet
This month we welcome a parade of folks from organizations doing good work to love the earth and build healthy community.

Judith Redmond of Full Belly Farm, joined us yesterday, June 3. I (Julie) was the recipient of a bunch of fresh red beets. Judith mentioned that her favorite beet recipe is on their website, so I tried it out. (Highly recommended, and lots of other great recipes, searchable by veggie are there, too!) She spoke with us about farming the land organically for over 30 years, about the benefits to both our bodies and the land when food is grown organically, and she shared vegetables and flowers from the farm! New cards about their CSA (community supported agriculture) program are available in the Parish Hall.

Sunday, June 9
The good folks from Planting Justice will talk about their work bringing together formerly incarcerated people with working the land. Here is their beautiful mission statement: "Planting Justice is a grassroots organization with a mission to empower people impacted by mass incarceration and other social inequities with the skills and resources to cultivate food sovereignty, economic justice, and community healing."

Sunday, June 23
Susan Schwartz of Friends of Five Creeks  talks about the health of our local waterways, and how we can make a difference. Five Creeks is the host of the popular monthly lecture series, Bay Currents, which takes place here at St. Alban's.

later... Sunday, August 11
