St. Alban's Episcopal Church
This Week at St. Alban's

Monday, August 5, 2019

Dear all,

Yesterday in church we prayed together a litany responding to gun violence, composed by The Rt. Rev. Stephen Lane, retired bishop of Maine. I encouraged folks to take it home and continue praying it this week. You can find it here. Don Goerlitz was handing out information about contacting our senators and encourages all to call and insist that the ban on assault weapons be reinstated.

If you're looking for facts and statistics, a great, factual site is the Gun Violence Archive. (Brace yourself - on the "Last 72 hours" tracker, I learned that there have already been 14 incidents around the country, TODAY with 2 fatalities as of 1 pm Pacific Time. Yesterday, across the U.S., 41 people died in shootings.) The site provides factual details based on crime scene information.

A good way to prevent violence: build real community! People who feel connected and valued are less likely to act violently on their frustrations. What we do as Church together is healing, holy work.

A dozen St. Alban's members joined with folks from All Souls and Good Shepherd Saturday night for a great tailgate dinner and fun time at the A's game. Here's a little evidence (at least Fred is watching the game!):

In a time of so much chaos and violence, it's good to remember that investing in loving community is what both brings joy and makes us safer. Another opportunity for food, fun and community is this Tuesday night (tomorrow!): National Night Out. Maybe you have plans in your own neighborhood – we will also have a potluck dinner and games here at the church. (5 - 7 pm, on the patio)

Finally, some sad news for us: the Tadeo family (Helen, Asha and Meso are in the photo above) are moving to Port Townsend, Washington. They've been through a rough ride in their housing situation and have decided to leave the Bay Area (at least for now). We're going to have  a special coffee hour to celebrate them and bless them on their way, on Sunday, August 18. Please contact me if you'd like to help with planning.

In love and gratitude,
Rev. Julie
P.S. My sermon from yesterday is here.

Special Guest this Sunday
Sean McConnell, Senior Director of Engagement at Episcopal Relief and Development, will be with us as preacher and forum presenter. Join us to learn about the good work our donations make possible, and hear from a gifted preacher.
