St. Alban's Episcopal Church
This Week at St. Alban's

Monday, June 17, 2019

Dear all,

First, a huge thank-you to the crew that put in the new fence posts on Saturday (if you haven't seen how great they look, take a peek out the library windows!). I know that our neighbor Irma is grateful, too.
All: Stay tuned for part II of the project, probably on Sat., June 29.

And, happy Feast of St. Alban! This Saturday, June 22, is our patronal feast day. Legend holds that St. Alban gave up his life to protect another, and was the first British martyr. You can read his story (as best we have it) here.

This spirit of self-giving is ever-present at St. Alban's, and all are blessed in the love we share. Take time to think this week: what have you learned about love from life at St. Alban's?

I'm on vacation this week and next. You'll be in good hands while I'm away – The Revs. Paula Nesbitt and Hanna Cornthwaite will be here on the 23rd and 30th, respectively, and The Rev. Corrie Lassen will lead the Wednesday noon services. Please contact the church office if you are in need of pastoral care, and Karen will get you connected to a local clergy person.

I'll be back in the office on July 2, and I look forward to catching up at that time.

In love and gratitude,
Rev. Julie

News from the Alameda Deanery

The deanery met at St. Clement's Church, Berkeley, last Thursday evening. Sandy Burnett, Laurie Schumacher, Louise Erickson and Rev. Julie Wakelee-Lynch attended as St. Alban's representatives. Please contact Sandy Burnett, Deanery President, with any questions.
Here are five take-aways from the meeting:

• A new Whole and Healthy Church Program training aimed at giving church members the tools to prevent adult or child abuse is now available online or via in-person training. See https://diocal.org/whole-and-healthy-church. The training is mandatory for all clergy, church leaders, key holders, etc., unless they have been certified within the last three years.

• Training for outreach ministries, formation, communications, volunteering, Eucharistic Ministers and Visitors, and the new safe church program will be offered Saturday, Sept. 7, at St. Paul's, Oakland, from 9 AM to 1:30 PM.

• The national church offers free materials for anti-racism training. The curriculum, entitled Sacred Ground, includes reading materials and videos. See
https://www.episcopalchurch.org/sacred-ground.

• The Rev. Julie Wakelee-Lynch challenged other parishes to join St. Alban’s in helping Youth Spirit Artworks build a tiny house village for homeless youth. Parishes can donate funds (it takes $16K to build a house) or join volunteer building sessions
(August 17-18 or 24-25 and September 7-8).

• The Diocese's Commission on the Environment has a new name: The Commission on Creation Care (CCC), which is promoting the carbon tracker, Sustain Island Home; supporting parishes in sustainable living and “greening” their parishes.

The Alameda Deanery is a consortium of 14 Episcopal churches in Northern Alameda County and Southern Contra Costa County. Representatives meet quarterly and serve to communicate information between the Deanery churches and the Diocese.
