St. Alban's Episcopal Church
This Week at St. Alban's

Monday, July 8, 2019

Dear all,

I was quite moved by Dani's powerful gospel-focused sermon from yesterday (see the "p.s." below for the link). And, I keep going back to the first reading, from 2 Kings. In it, a military leader suffering from leprosy and desperate for a cure, is told by the prophet to wash 7 times in the Jordan River. Offended by the simplicity of the task, he storms off...until "a servant" suggests "Father, if the prophet had commanded you to do something difficult, would you not have done it? How much more, when all he said to you was, 'Wash, and be clean'?"

We are taught to incline toward heroic acts, grand splashy gestures. But the true story of redemption is often much quieter, coming in everyday things as common (and miraculous) as water. What do our hearts miss, looking for the neon lights or the sky-writing airplane?

One of the things I appreciated most when I attended a recent zero-waste workshop with Stefanie Regni, the owner of Albany-based Fillgood, was that she began (and ended) her talk reminding us that we do not need to be perfect, each individually achieving "zero" waste, but for many people to do small things, to change small habits, which has the cumulative power to make a big impact.

If you are free this Wednesday evening at 6:30 pm, please join us in the library for a conversational presentation about what some of those small steps might be. She will also have some items from her shop, to give you ideas of practical things you can change around the home. (We are moving toward some of these changes at the church, too.)
The vestry will hold a special meeting this Thursday at 7 pm to review financial statements and consider next steps as we seek to be good stewards for St. Alban's.

Blessings on your week ahead.

In love and gratitude,
Rev. Julie
