St. Alban's Episcopal Church
This Week at St. Alban's

Monday, December 3, 2018

Dear all,

In my morning emails today was the beautiful poem below, by Dani Gabriel. It pretty well sums up how I felt yesterday in and after church, too. Many thanks to everyone who made our pledge in-gathering celebration so beautiful, and special thanks to Kathleen Kook, who spoke with us about her photos, now on display, and Isaac Pastor-Chermak, who blessed us with 20 minutes of stunning Bach concerto.

Here's one of Kathleen's photos (from Taos, NM).

See below for Advent resources that were made available at church and/or that you can find online.

Now, Dani's poem:

i am in love
with the empty church
an hour before the service
while the chairs are still stacked
and the coffee just begins to bubble.
the altar is covered in a blue cloth,
the spotlight is off.

has breath held,
hoping the guests arrive.
we row the chairs,
stack the hymnals.
they begin to enter,
pressed pants and sparkly shoes.
good morning.
a small hand in a larger, rougher one.
a cane scrapes the floor.
a gorgeous hat,
a wide smile.

these weeks before christmas
we say we are waiting
for the light
to be born into the world,
for the first cry,
the infant sigh.
but mornings like this I think
the light is already here.
we are waiting til we’re ready
to open our eyes.

May God be with you in this beautiful, thin season of waiting, preparing, and hoping.

In love and gratitude,
Rev. Julie
