St. Alban's Episcopal Church
This Week at St. Alban's
June 29, 2020
Dear Friends,
You’ll probably see it a few more times, but just a reminder, that this coming Sunday, July 5 returns us to a 10 AM service time.

This past Sunday, we heard again the shocking story of Abraham and Isaac’s potential sacrifice, how Jesus travelled as he preached, and how the apostles spent their time listening. Steve Hitchcock’s reflection (download here) talked about how now is a special time of God’s mission when we are enjoined to “mundane acts of kindness.” To see a recording of the service, click here (password: 9J*k0&#3).

After the service, Deacon Dani and Katherine Kasameyer led a discussion of St. Alban’s response to the recent letter from the Union of Black Episcopalians. Suggestions included:
            ▪  Participating in the 10-part On Sacred Ground program being hosted through All Souls (see below for sign up information).
            ▪  Those who can’t take part can still read the recommended books: Waking Up White: and Finding Myself in the Story by Debby Irving, and Jesus and the Disinherited by Howard Thurman.
            ▪  Support Black-owned businesses and causes.
            ▪  Use political clout to support justice issues.
            ▪  Attend the Social and Economic Justice Committee on-line meeting at 7:30 p.m. July 7 to discuss local justice issues. Click here to register.

Vestry approves Internet proposal, Ina Lawrence grants
Several items have come up for Vestry approval between official meetings. The Vestry approved via email this past week:
            ▪   An addition to the previously adopted list of Ina Lawrence grants to include $1000 to Calliope, $500 to the Alameda Food Bank and $500 to the Contra Costa Food Bank. The Ina Lawrence Fund restricts proceeds from a special endowment to outreach programs.
            ▪   An agreement that Calliope, pending its board approval July 1, will pay up to $4,200 to upgrade Internet service and equipment at St. Alban’s. In exchange, St. Alban’s will credit back $1,000 to be applied to future rental payments. The upgrade is expected to facilitate live-streaming capabilities from St. Alban’s. Monthly internet fees are to be the same or less as currently.
The Vestry also is considering a proposal for a Montessori pre-school program. Classroom Matters has decided not to renew its lease for the after-school program. Details about the Montessori program are still being reviewed.

In light of public health recommendations to increase social distancing and reduce the incidence and spread of COVID-19, St. Alban’s is suspending rental use of the building until further notice. St. Alban's will follow the diocese, state, and county mandates as to re-opening phases. As a community gathering place for people of all ages, we have determined that these measures are required to ensure the safety of the St. Alban’s community and the public at large.
