St. Alban's Episcopal Church
This Week at St. Alban's
September 7, 2020

Dear Friends,
Hope this finds you keeping cool and hydrated today. In Sunday's sermon, Deacon Dani talked about what it means when Jesus says “wherever two or three are gathered” in His name, He is there, even now, when we can’t gather in person. What would it be like if we imagine Jesus, with the rest of us, in one of the little boxes on our Zoom screens? And what’s it like to notice when someone is missing from the screen? To read Dani’s reflection, click here. To view the service, click here (passcode: qOM6^0w4). To listen to Richard's organ music click prelude and postlude.

The new Montessori School starts at St. Alban’s tomorrow. There will be a few, socially-distanced, children in the Parish Hall again. What a blessing.

Meanwhile, the Montessori staff and Vestry continue to work on developing a design for the required barrier in the courtyard, that also takes into account the needs of the people who pick up their Full Belly Farm boxes.

Have a good week everyone. I have to catch up on my homework before today’s Sacred Ground class. — Sandy

Project Sandwich is still going strong, bringing food to our homeless neighbors! If you would like to volunteer, the program delivers sandwiches on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Email me for details at

**Special Note: We need to make room for a new tenant - If you would like any of Barbara Hill's beautiful greeting cards, please let us know how many and whether you prefer animals, flowers, or a combination of both and we will prepare a packet for you. We would welcome donations of any amount.

Third Sunday Concerts at St. Alban's:
As we've mentioned before, COVID safety concerns are keeping us on our toes; current health guidelines mean many musicians can't perform together inside. Therefore, our scheduled concert by the Ricardo Peixoto Jazz Quartet has been cancelled by the lead musician; he feels his sound requires a real piano, and that's pretty hard to do outside.

But not to worry! Third Sunday Concert Series Curator Jane Lenoir never fails to bring extraordinary music to us; meet the Illy Bogart Jazz Quartet. Illy Bogart's unique musical voice draws from a wide variety of music influences, from classic jazz to modern funk and hip hop. (Click this link to get a tasty sample!)
Led by Grammy Award-winner Tony Peebles (Pacific Mambo Orchestra) with Lyle Link (Warren Wolf, Ralph Peterson) on Saxophones; Ian McArdle (Erik Jekabson, Jacam Manricks) on Keyboards; and Isaac Schwartz (Negative Press Project, High Standards) on Drums, this is one heck of a band!

The show, co-produced with St. Alban's, will be livestreamed from the St. Alban's Courtyard on Sunday, September 20th at 4 p.m. Tickets are on Eventbrite. As always, the recording of the live show will be up and available for a full week after the show has aired. This means ticket-holders can watch it as many times as they like, replay favorite parts, and even miss the initial show and have it as their own personal "on demand" viewing.

As always, Safety First! The courtyard will be closed to the public, and masks, distancing and other safety measures will be in play, and the musicians have committed to the social bubble guidelines put forth by the Alameda County Health Officer.

Marsha Kirschbaum's amazing imagery is exhibited in the Parish Hall, which, right now, is not accessible but you can see her magnificent landscape photography by here. She has recently been on a three week Comet Neowise chase, starting in San Leandro and working her way to the Alabama Hills in the Eastern Sierra. You can see those photographs here.

The Alzheimer's Association Support Group that meets at St. Alban's now has online education programs. Information can be downloaded here.

In light of public health recommendations to increase social distancing and reduce the incidence and spread of COVID-19, St. Alban’s is suspending rental use of the building until further notice. St. Alban's will follow the diocese, state, and county mandates as to re-opening phases. As a community gathering place for people of all ages, we have determined that these measures are required to ensure the safety of the St. Alban’s community and the public at large.
