St. Alban's Episcopal Church
This Week at St. Alban's

Monday, June 10, 2019

Dear all,

Hope you have managed to stay cool and hydrated today. If you are ever concerned about feeling safe in your home in very hot weather, please let me know -- we have some cool(er) spaces here, and also I just want to know that you have what you need, as more extreme weather seems to be a trend.

On Sunday, we had a very Pentecost-appropriate conversation with Haleh Zandi of Planting Justice, learning about their life-changing education and employment programs for formerly incarcerated individuals. We heard about their landscape servicesretail nursery in Oakland, and their new farm (and affordable, sustainable housing) in El Sobrante, as well as their recent purchase, with Mira Vista UCC Church,  of the former Adachi Nursery in El Sobrante.

Today's edition of Berkeleyside featured a story about the partnership. Read it here. It is a really beautiful picture of what church can look like, truly immersed in the community. Want to know how you can support Planting Justice's work?  Watch this short video to find out more!

In my sermon yesterday, I mentioned the importance of listening amid the cacauphony of Pentecost (and life in general). I shared this poem, from former U.S. Poet Laureate, Miller Williams:

The Last Person to Speak His Language Is Dying[1]

Ways to say good-bye are going with him.

Words he said to his woman when she died
were long since said for the last time.
The nurse bends down.
“Do you hear me?”

He gives her the twenty syllables of summer.
She will be the last person to hear them.

“The fever,” she says.

Let's pray that God gives us the grace to hear what needs to be heard, and the softness of heart to listen.

In love and gratitude,
Rev. Julie

P.S. My sermon from Sunday is here.
P.P.S. Don't miss the note in the calendar about the fence-building party this Saturday morning. Food, fun and carpentry, all together!
