St. Alban's Episcopal Church
This Week at St. Alban's

Monday, October 8, 2018

Dear all,

Hope you are staying cool and comfortable this warm, dry autumn day! Many thanks to all who attended the parish meeting yesterday. For those who were not able to attend, here's what we covered:

The Phase I Project:
  • What's been accomplished so far in Phase I (Sanctuary building) (a long list! will be posted here next week!)
  • What's still to be done in this phase, and when (a shorter list, also appearing here next week.)
Finances  (click for slide)
  • What money we've raised ($362,000)
  • What we've borrowed ($160,000)
  • What money we've spent (preconstruction: $99,318; add-ons: $154,463; Phase I construction: $207, 950)
  • What we still need to raise (about $100,000 + plus loan repayment)

It is our very fond hope that we will be in the Sanctuary for Christmas.
Meanwhile, LaClaire's sermon yesterday reminded me of one of my favorite Denise Levertov poems, so I'm including it here as a little spiritual treasure for the week. (Her sermon is linked below.)

The Fountain,
by Denise Levertov

Don’t say, don’t say there is no water
to solace the dryness at our hearts.
I have seen

the fountain springing out of the rock wall
and you drinking there. And I too
before your eyes

found footholds and climbed
to drink the cool water.

The woman of that place, shading her eyes,
frowned as she watched—but not because
she grudged the water,

only because she was waiting
to see we drank our fill and were
refreshed.

Don’t say, don’t say there is no water.
That fountain is there among its scalloped
green and gray stones,

it is still there and always there
with its quiet song and strange power
to spring in us,
up and out through the rock.

In love and gratitude,

2018 Blessing of the Animals
Sunday afternoon found parishioners, neighbors, one rat, one cat, one photo of a cat, and many happy dogs on the church patio for the blessing of the animals. Below are a few highlights.

Making organic food accessible
to low-income members of the church and neighborhood

Dani Gabriel, our fabulous intern from the School for Deacons, has discovered that there are grants funds that can be combined with SNAP (food stamps) to make purchasing
the Full Belly organic farm boxes delivered here each week very affordable.

We are looking for one (or two) adults who would like to work with her to set this up.
If you are interested, please contact Rev. Julie (rector@st-albans-albany.org)
or Dani Gabriel (allthepossible@gmail.com) for more information!
