This Week at St. Alban's

Monday, October 22, 2018

Dear all,

What an incredible weekend! Following on a remarkable DioCal annual convention, we gathered for worship and Bread for the World Sunday, and, Sunday afternoon, a number of us had great fun at the Third Sunday concert with Nomad Session, after the concert we got to try out any instrument we wanted!

Here is Barbara Metcalf's granddaughter, Leilia, trying out the clarinet. (It sounded great!) Music is so important – it relaxes, brings joy, and even helps organize our brain! I'm so grateful to be in a place that celebrates this gift that engages our whole bodies (I tried out the brass instruments and can testify that it takes a lot more than just wind!)

In the vestry meeting which preceded the concert, we began with a reflection that continued the theme of Bread for the World Sunday, sharing stories of hunger and abundance. (Report from the vestry meeting business will be in next week's email.) Many thanks to all who wrote letters supporting strong food policies relating to the most vulnerable. I encourage you to take time this week to reflect on your own experience of plenty and scarcity, and how that shapes your faith, your word-view, and how you live your life.

Many thanks to Chanthip and Sandy who wrote up the summary of Diocesan Convention found here. It includes a link to the incredible panel conversation on Saturday morning, in which our own Rev. Sara was a featured speaker.

May your week be blessed with gratitude.

In love and gratitude,
Rev. Julie

Making organic food accessible
to low-income members of the church and neighborhood

On Sunday, the vestry heard a proposal from intern Dani Gabriel about a program to combine grants funds with  SNAP (food stamps) to make purchasing the Full Belly organic farm boxes delivered here each week very affordable.

We'll be working out the details and hoping to start the program in December. We're  are looking for one (or two) more adults who would like to work with her to set this up.
If you are interested, please contact Rev. Julie (rector@st-albans-albany.org)
or Dani Gabriel (allthepossible@gmail.com) for more information!

Thanksgiving is coming,
and the Tofurkey is getting fat!

(Or was that the Turduckin?)

Thanksgiving Day is Thursday, November 22.

Our usual Potluck hosts will be out of town.
Are there a few folks who will definitely be in town who would like to coordinate?
(The church provides the turkey/s.)

This is meal, often accompanied by games and
other frivolity and also provides a celebratory
space for folks who do not have other
family in the area on this holiday.

Last Sunday was Bread for the World Sunday – we sent an offering of letters to our elected representatives in support of food justice. Now  mark your calendar for a day of respite and renewal with others who care about justice. RSVP now for this free event.
