Halifax friends! I am going to be DJing at 1313 this Thursday December 5th, come on out and represent the Cuban dance community and I do my best to conjure some Cuban sunshine to heat up our winter nights!

A quick look at nengon

Nengon is a style of music and dance from eastern Cuba.

Music
From a music perspective, nengon is considered to be part of the changuï complex, or the broader son complex. Nengon is thought to be a predecessor to changuï, alongside kiriba and regina, and is characterized by less heavy syncopation than changuï. The instrumentation may have originally been a bit different than changuï, apparently using an earth-bow for bass rather than the marimbula that later became a standard bass instrument with changuï º although these days nengon would generally be played by a changuï group such as Changuï de Guantanamo, with either a marimbula or possibly a bass guitar. Nengon is noted for its steadily alternating vocals lines between a soloist and a chorus.

Dance
Not unlike pilón, nengon, as you can see in the videos here, has a mimetic quality, that of spreading coffee beans to dry with the sweeping motion of the feet. Apart from that it’s a fairly basic dance.
