Dairy Checkoff News and Updates

Building trust and sales in dairy on behalf of Indiana dairy farmers
May Traditions Come Alive

There's nothing like the month of May in Indiana, and on May 7th, dairy farmer Jill Houin of Homestead Dairy (Plymouth) shares her Indianapolis 500 history and excitement for the final virtual farm tour of the semester. Named the “Coolest Trophy in Sports” by ESPN, the drink of milk at the end of the race shines an international spotlight on dairy farmers each year. Jill is this year's Milk Person, charged each year with handing the iconic bottle of milk to the winning driver.

Special guests from the 500 Festival Princesses will join Jill on the farm to learn more about dairy farming. These influential young women use their platform to show the sustainable farming practices dairy farms use throughout the year.

Earth Day Spotlight: "Protecting the Planet One Glass At a Time"

This blog post from Indiana State University dietetic student Mary Dembowski shows just how much she learned about dairy farming and sustainability during her internship at ADAI.

Farmers have a great message to share with consumers about the steps dairy farmers have taken toward a more sustainable future. For instance, dairy provides more than half of the calcium and vitamin D and 18% of the protein consumed by Americans, while the U.S. dairy industry's greenhouse gas footprint is only about 1.3% of the U.S. total.  Learn more about dairy’s work toward sustainability goals and how to share these accomplishments with your neighbors.
As part of ongoing work to engage with thought leaders in the healthcare setting, ADAI will be hosting a 3-part webinar series with Ball State University, College of Health. Each session will be developed to bring awareness to current and future healthcare professionals as well as community leaders about dairy- not just as a source of nutritious food for a growing population, but as an answer to environmental concerns through sustainable farming practices.  Additionally, webinars will be recorded for implementation into curriculum for students within the College of Health. The first of the series, “It Takes A Village: Understanding Youth Wellness and the Impact of An Allied Community” Earth was held March 18th with more than 275 registrants!
