January 2016

Hello everybody

Firstly allow us to wish you all a very prosperous 2016.

Team Offroad partner Gerrie Van Eeden decided enough is enough, ventured out on a new path and created his own media company called DUST Media.  As you can deduct from the name it has to do with dust, and to create dust the wheels have to turn. Kicking up dust is what this is all about and in 2016 DUST Media in conjunction with Team Offroad is going to help you GET YOUR DUST ON!

Read on to see what we have planned for the year.

For you pleasure we have devised an all new 4x4 Challenge Series for the Western Cape called the DUST CHALLENGE SERIES.  What is it all about, you ask? Well, let's tell you more.

The DUST CHALLENGE SERIES consists of a series of 4x4 related challenges, where you can test your skills as well as your vehicle's limits.  Each Challenge Event will cover a different aspect of 4x4 Driving and is aimed at skills rather than brute force.  Therefore our target market is not the highly modified 4x4 fraternity as much as it is the drivers of standard to slightly modified 4x4's.  Although oopsies will happen, we do not foresee the events as vehicle breakers and we will endeavour to not include obstacles that will cause harm to your vehicle when driven along the proper lines and with an appropriate amount of "enthusiasm".

DUST Midnight Challenge - 9/10 April 2016*
During this event we will test your night vision and night GPS navigation skills while traversing a series of fairly challenging 4x4 trails.  Along the way you will be confronted with tasks to perform for points, as well as challenging obstacles to conquer in the dark.  This is not going to be a flat out race, and not a convoy drive either.  Each vehicle will drive in its own "darkness".  We plan to keep the participants busy from dusk till dawn. The top 3 places of this event automatically gains entry into the Grand Final.

DUST Sand Challenge - 4 June 2016*
Our mission is not to recreate the famous Atlantis Fun Day, we want to bring a new dimension to sand dune driving. During this event we will test your sand driving and GPS navigation skills while traversing a series of fairly challenging sand dunes in a quest to find some hidden gems in a GeoCaching type treasure hunt.  The shortest distance travelled to visit all the checkpoints, in conjunction with succefully completing the most tasks will win you this challenge.  It is not about time, it is about precision navigation and driving.  Once again the top 3 places of this event automatically gains entry into the Grand Final, unless you already gained entry through a previous event, then the next person gets your spot.

DUST Weekend Challenge - 13/14 August 2016*
This weekend event kicks off on Saturday morning on a venue yet to be confirmed. We envisage a day long drive on a 4x4 trail with some obstacles, challenges and tasks for the teams to perform to accumulate points. At the end of the day we make a bush camp where everybody must be 100% self-sufficient.  Around a camp fire the group can exchange stories about their travels into the wildest Africa or just generally have a good time (this will not count points, so you can relax), to be ready for the next day when we continue on the trail to finish off the challenge early afternoon.  Based on the points gathered, the top 3 places of this event automatically gains entry into the Grand Final, unless you already gained entry through a previous event, then the next person gets your spot.

DUST Mud & Grime Challenge - 10 September 2016*
What is a 4x4 challenge series without a bit of mud?  This is going to be a traditional 4x4 challenge with flags and barrier tape.  It is not going to be a vehicle breaker, but some precision driving will be required.  Points are awarded for successfully completing obstacles, while points will be deducted for touching the barriers, or rolling back.  The top 3 places of this event automatically gains entry into the Grand Final.

*All dates to be confirmed.

The Grand Final that we keep referring to above?

Tankwa DUST Rally 25/26/27 November 2016
This is the Grand Final we work towards.  The top three qualifiers from each event and the next best three will qualify for this so we will have 15 finalists competing for the crown.
This will be held in the Tankwa Karoo on Stonehenge Farm (famous as the location for the annual AfrikaBurn Festival). This will then be the final event for the series where the real winner will be crowned. Over a period of 2 days the participants will be tested on a variety of terrains in an overland regularity raid stage to crown the eventual DUST Challenge Champion for 2016.

There will also be other events on the same weekend, and collectively they will be known as the Tankwa Dust Rally.

If you are keen to participate in this challenge series, watch this space, and subscribe to the DUST Media mailing list here

Team Offroad has also not been sitting, resting on our laurels. A very successful recovery course was held at Atlantis Dunes at the end of last year, and we are proud to say it was enjoyed by all. And we also think they found it helpful. We are presenting level training this weekend at Welgelegen again, and the first class for the year is full. Let’s hope it sets the tone for the rest of the year, but with all the activities that we have lined up, we are going to be very busy this year. And you, Team Offroaders, as well. It is time to get out there and get our wheels turning and the Dust flying.

If you do not want to miss out on what we have planned, make sure you keep an eye on our calendar
