So much more than just an injection!!!

Writing a newsletter about vaccinations that people will actually read is easier said than done! I can imagine you thinking “My goodness, what have I not heard or read about vaccinations and why my pets should be visiting their vet once a year?!”. Well, think about this:
Immunisation is actually part of what we call primary health care. This concept become quite a buzz word in South Africa a few years ago. While writing this I had a look beyond our borders at what the world has to say about this principle because it is of such great importance in every country.
The University of Bristol’s definition spoke to my heart – “it is caring for PEOPLE rather than the specific disease”. What they mean is that professionals working in primary health care deal with a broad spectrum of physical, psychological and social problems rather than just in specific diseases. So while primary health care does include providing treatment for common illnesses, it is also focused on PREVENTION OF FUTURE ILL-HEALTH through advice, immunisation and screening programmes.

So these are the “services” we include in your pets’ vaccinations. It is the only time when a healthy pet is at the vet when you as owner are not stressed by pet illness and can discuss all your concerns. It is our time to examine Fluffy from nose to toes so we can make recommendations for future health based on observations, and provides the opportunity for us to pick up subtle signs that may indicate early disease which can be managed before becoming severe. More importantly, it is where long term relationships are formed, sometimes for up to 18 years with the patient and many more with the client.
We therefore invite you to come and talk to us about your concerns when Fluffy is due for vaccination, because this annual visit is worth far more than just an injection!
In June, we offer a 10% discount on vaccination visits so take advantage of this chance to practice real primary health care!
