September Newsletter 2018

In a recent week I took a ferry out to Great Diamond Island to lead a beach baptism for a 4-month old boy and his family, and several days later did a memorial
service for a dear friend and her family in Saco. A beginning and an ending, both with tears.

When I met with my friend to plan his wife's service, I brought him the following quote from the book Blue Sapphire.
Listening, he smiled knowingly and said that his wife's birthstone was sapphire.

"Tears seem to move according to their own rhythm and pace. Equally mysterious is the knowledge and awareness that come to us through tears. Tears can lift us out of complacency and sharpen one’s awareness of the fragility and preciousness of life.
Tears can open the soul to the world."

Passages are occasions to welcome and acknowledge the presence
of Presence, the spirit of Spirit, with us always.
Every moment is a passage.

Spiritual Companionship

I continue to offer Spiritual Companionship: individual meetings for students in my home office sanctuary.
These are opportunities to develop interfaith spiritual practice, explore the everyday divine, discern what God might be asking, create sacred space to listen to the still, small voice within, and other ways to honor and join the eternal Presence, the Mystery.

Each meeting opens with a silent meditation framed by the sound of a Tibetan singing bowl.

In coming Spiritual Companion Newsletters I will be sharing excerpts from my new book

We’re Gainin’: Collins Brook, A Maine Free School - A Memoir.

One reviewer says, "The truly wonderful story of Collins Brook, especially the ringing of the bell by anyone to call the whole school to a spontaneous celebration of democracy and working spirituality, to fill the great hollowness in the world culture so mired in money and violence, something every community and neighborhood in the world can create, a coming together of people of like mind and heart to create a love-centered, love-powered living covenant."
