Spiritual Companion

July Newsletter 2019

For me, the key to meditation is to have it be my life, instead of an activity I "do" when I 'think' of it. In fact my life is largely free of thought, or of waiting. My mind will be there when I need it; it doesn't have to run my life. Along with it's cozy first cousin my ego, it loves to tempt me with thoughts of the past and plans for the future. Meditation helps me live in the present, what I call the precious present moment.

Insight Timer

Morning Blessing Gift of Homecoming

Welcome home. Be welcomed to this day at hand. Be in the day effortlessly, without having to make it happen. The earth turns by itself, creating this fresh morning, this fresh time and space for you.
In my house silence is easiest at night while the people and animals of the city sleep. Hold on to the silence for a while longer, keeping it wrapped around you like a fine cloak. Do nothing but breathe…
After being out of your body for the night, return to your body now. Come and be at home. Feel yourself, your feet on the earth, your legs, middle, your chest and arms, and head and face. Begin to stretch and move out into the day.
As you come from the background of sleep’s unconsciousness, let a feeling emerge into the foreground. Right now I feel curious. What feeling will the very next moment bring? More of the familiar pattern or some unexpected feeling?
Do you know your soul? After the firestorm or flood of feelings what is there but the quiet of essence? Come be at home in this new and ancient way. Again there is nothing to do but be with yourself at the deepest level.
May you go out and meet the day whole, alive and eager to experience what you find. Let there be familiarity as you encounter other souls wandering through the day.
Your gift today is homecoming.

This meditation from my book Enso Morning is available on Insight Timer, the free meditation app for smart phones: Thousands of free meditations, plus the timer function. Another meditation, “Change”  is available now, and more are to come. The easiest way to find them is to go to the app and search for my name.
