Julian is a pioneer of biodynamic grape growing and winemaking, his deep respect and appreciation for the intuitive aspects of winemaking combined with wine science gives an insight into the reasons for his success.
The Castagna label has been recognized by Langton’s Classification of Australian Wines for his Genesis Syrah, his inclusion as one of the Financial Times’ twelve best Australian winemakers and not least by the fact that Lavinia at Boulevard de la Madelaine, Paris, arguably the world’s best wine store, stocks the Castagna label.
The Castagna vineyard is situated just outside Beechworth, Northeast Victoria high in the foothills of the Victorian Alps. At an altitude of 500 metres above sea level the soil consists of decomposed granitic loam on a base of clay.
Julian applies the Rudolf Steiner principles of farming to achieve best fruit quality and a philosophy of minimum interference in the winemaking process. These are but a few elements to best describe the terroir that sets Castagna wines apart and that imparts a feeling of energy, refinement, yet clarity of taste rarely found in wine.
This is a must attend evening.
