  From the President's Desk...

As this year progresses we hope you have enjoyed the venues and lunches to date. It is our intention to continue offering a variety of venues and styles of lunches so that the committee can assess popular and workable venues for the future. A variety of venues also results in a variety of prices but your committee works hard to offer the best value for you each time. I think you will agree, particularly this year, that we have achieved some better venues at lower prices.

In August our lunch will be at the Four Points by Sheraton Sydney, Darling Harbour and we are privileged to have as our guest speaker, Sarina Bratton AM, FAICD, Australasian Chairman of Ponant cruise line. Sarina, frequently termed ‘Australia’s First Lady’ of cruising is an exceptionally inspirational industry celebrity.

Put these other events in your diary now

Sep 14 – You will join us at again the fabulous Apprentice Restaurant in Ultimo. Great value for money, great atmosphere plus we are supporting our future hospitality employees.

Oct 12 – lunch will be at the William Blue Dining at the Rocks. This is an hospitality training restaurant and will be interesting and great value as we support more trainees.

Nov 09 – The Vice President’s Breakfast at City Tattersalls Club. Please bring potential new members along, as we will be promoting the benefits of SKAL.

Dec 09 – Friday – our real Christmas lunch at the Four Seasons Hotel. Please note the change of date. We expect this will be a highlight event for the year so don’t miss out on this one.

We look forward to seeing you at the Four Points by Sheraton.

Sneak Preview August Lunch

Skal will have the pleasure of welcoming Sarina Bratton frequently termed "Australia's First Lady of Crusing" to our August Luncheon.

Sarina Bratton, a leading travel industry figure with a stellar reputation gained for her role in pioneering luxury international cruising in the Australian market, she has recently been awarded an Order of Australia in the Australia Day Honours.

Her passion for small ship luxury cruising, as well as her acknowledged international reputation, knowledge and expertise in this fast-emerging cruise vacation category, led to her appointment late last year as Chairman Australasia for the luxury French yacht and expedition cruise line, Compagnie du Ponant. She was also appointed Special Advisor to the company’s Marseilles-headquartered executive board.

   Sabina Ziolkowski
   Founder
   Travel Industry Network

How long have you been a Skal Member?
Just over a month now.
Which clubs have you been a member of?
Sydney SKAL
Why are you a member? What is the benefit of Skal membership for you?
I joined Skal to meet a broader range of industry people.
What is the best thing about being a member of Skal?
Networking with people that I would not have had the opportunity to meet through my job and its related events.
What is the biggest challenge facing the travel and tourism industry right now?
That would depend on who you ask. I would say technology, however I also believe technology offers the biggest opportunity. So perhaps the biggest challenge is to step outside of how things have always been done and look for innovation.
What has been your favourite holiday destination so far?
'Holiday', ... is that where you do not much? I did 'not much' in Italy for about 6 months once. Otherwise, I love travelling. No favourites. I'd go everywhere again, but I've still got everywhere else to get to, so I suspect I'm going to run out of time.
Where would you like to go next?
The next international travel is to India, then maybe I'll try to fit in a holiday. Perhaps somewhere warm ... with cocktails.
What is the best piece of advice someone has given you?
That would have to have come from Nike - just do it!
What do you like about working at your current place of work?
I answer to myself.
What are the challenges?
I answer to myself!
How do you relax outside of work?
Yoga and playing with my nieces.
What would you do if you weren't in the travel and tourism industry?
I've done that and I'm here now.
What is your favourite Skal moment?
Ask me again after National Assembly. I'll have had a few more moments to comment on by then. I've been to a few lunches already and everyone has been welcoming and friendly. In just a short time I already feel part of the family.
