  From the President's Desk...

The lunch on the 11th May at the NSW Parliament House in the esteemed Stranger’s Dining Room was, from all accounts a great success.

The Hon Stuart Ayres, Minister for Trade, Tourism & Major Events, Minister for Sport gave a passionate and enlightening speech, amongst other things, touching on the Government’s plans to grow tourism across the New South Wales region. Additional funding tied to good quality marketing in the Regional Tourism Offices will be key in achieving this. The Minister took a number of questions from the floor and stayed for some photos before returning to the sitting Parliament.
Mr Jonathan O’Dea, member for Davidson and Parliamentary Secretary for Trade, Tourism & Major Events also hosted us for the entire lunch. Mr O’Dea invited members to join the Gallery for question time at the conclusion of the lunch and a number of our members took the opportunity. Sorry if you missed this interesting and fun lunch.

We had excellent coverage in Travel Daily on Thursday the 12th. Alan Collingwood gave us a couple of minutes on his background and also made Travel Daily in the ‘Window Seat’ column. Our profile is being lifted in the industry with coverage for 2 months in a row.

We inducted 2 new members:
Tui Eruera and Steve Martinez both from the Livn Group. Well done Sean on introducing these new members to our Club.

Next month’s lunch is a combined SKAL Sydney Clubs lunch, organised by SKAL Sydney North. It will be at the Greek Restaurant Aesop’s, owned by Sydney North member, James Gamvrogiannis, on the 3rd Wednesday – 15th June at 12.30. Jayson Westbury will be the guest speaker and it is always a good fun lunch so put this date in your diary now! Another good lunch to bring guests. Once again we will be taking bookings using the Trybooking system.

We look forward to seeing you in June.

And don't forget to read on for your chance to win the prize for guessing who our August Guest Speaker is. Good luck!

President Sue Francis

Skal Sydney Website - Update coming soon!

In the coming weeks we will be adding a list of members to the Skal International Sydney website. This is important to give potential and new members an idea of the types of people and organisations that are involved in our club.

Due to privacy laws we require your permission to display your details on this list.

Next week you will receive an email asking you to respond and provide your permission.
Please ensure you reply to this email so we can complete this update.

If you do not wish to be included on this public listing of our members please advise when you respond to the email.

Sneak Preview July and August - Save the Dates

Our July lunch will be held on Wednesday the 13th of July 2016 at the William Blue College in The Rocks.
We will have a very special guest so make sure you behave yourself in the coming weeks! Put this date in your diary now and be there with your (jingle) bells on (hint hint).

Guess August's Speaker and Win!

On August 10th we have a very special guest speaker.

She is considered Australia's First Lady of Cruising and the travel and tourism industry is indeed lucky to have her, as she previously won Australian medals in three different sports before injury forced an end to competition and the start of an impressive business career.

If you can guess who August's guest speaker is you are in the running to win a $30 Coles Myer gift card. The first person to reply to this email with the correct answer will win the prize. The winner will be presented with the gift card at the June luncheon.

How long have you been a Skal Member?
I have been a member of Skal since November of 2015.
Which clubs have you been a member of?
I am a member of Skal International Sydney.
Why are you a member? What is the benefit of Skal membership for you?
I originally joined Skal to meet other like-minded industry professionals within the hospitality sector and to increase my network connections in the hotel industry. Skal enables me to meet people whom have been in the hospitality and travel industry for many years, the knowledge and experience these people have gained is vast. Through these members imparting their experience, knowledge and stories with me I believe this will benefit me within my career in hospitality for many years to come.
What is the best thing about being a member of Skal?
Swapping experiences and stories with the senior members of Skal, this and the fantastic venues we hold the monthly meeting at has always been a plus.
What is the biggest challenge facing the travel and tourism industry right now?
With the boom in the China market and the ever changing distribution channels through new and innovative technology this has meant that travel and tourism professionals must consistently evolve and modify their approach and way of thinking to capitalise on the changes in the international market as well as any new technologies that connect the world.
What has been your favourite holiday destination so far?
My favourite destination would have to be Whistler in Canada. Whistler has possibly the best skiing in the world.
Where would you like to go next?
Would love to go to Machu Picchu in Peru, I am very interested in seeing this ancient architecture of Machu Picchu that has withstood the test of time.
What is the best piece of advice someone has given you?
To never look back in regret, move on to the next thing.
What do you like about working at your current place of work?
All the interesting people you come across that travel to Sydney, each guest has a story to tell.
What are the challenges?
Dealing with difficult guests can prove a hearty challenge, managing high demand on busy periods of time can become time consuming.
How do you relax outside of work?
Go for a jog (to take my mind of work) and sit on the balcony with a good book there is nothing better.
What would you do if you weren't in the travel and tourism industry?
I would be a teacher, within my job as a property manager I believe my patience would aid me in a teaching profession.
What is your favourite Skal moment?
Just recently having Lunch at Parliament House and hearing Minister for Tourism Stuart Ayers MP speak about Travel and Tourism and direction the industry is heading, challenges faced and upcoming opportunities (the volume of travel within the growing China market) will always be a highlight which I will never forget.
