Full STEAM Ahead

The FSA mission is to supplement middle school curriculum and encourage student curiosity with applied activities hosted by local STEAM role models. In the past Kinney Construction Services (KCS) and Peak Engineering have led tours of construction projects (top photo), a STEAM night was hosted at Mountain Charter School where students learned about the color spectrum (bottom left), and Jim Tuck worked with an after school model train club at Sechrist Elementary School (bottom right).

An orientation for teacher/professional pairings is scheduled for October 29th. This year we are excited to announce involvement with professionals from the following organizations:

  • The Arboretum at Flagstaff
  • International Raptor & Falconry Center
  • NAU Physics Department
  • NAU Planetary Science
  • Americorps VISTA
  • Arizona Trail Association's Seeds of Stewardship
  • Kinney Construction Services
  • Peak Engineering
  • Coconino Community College
STEM City was one of the 39 Flagstaff nonprofits that was awarded a generous grant by the Flagstaff Arts Council through the annual Art & Science Fund General Operating Support and Project grant programs.

"As the City's art, science, and culture agency, Flagstaff Arts Council believes in the STEM movement and particularly the STEAM movement. We recently adopted a new mission statement, to foster creative opportunity. Arts and STEM in our community are advanced by our creative spirit and desire to discover. Flagstaff Arts Council champions our creative sector and the opportunity for all to participate because we believe that art, creativity, and discovery are critical for a well rounded education, building community, and developing a strong creative economy. Our grantmaking programs, primarily funded through BBB tax funds, are designed to have broad impact throughout our nonprofit community. We are happy to be able to support STEM City because of its focus on STEAM and building collaborations between schools and the broader city. Being known as America's 1st STEM City exemplifies Flagstaff's ambition and the dedication of all the individuals involved in the STEM movement. "
