Our key message is this:
World Hepatitis Summit
Glasgow, Scotland, Sept 2-4. 2015
Action Hepatitis Canada was well represented at the 1st World Hepatitis Summit. The feedback has been good, and there were a lot of great suggestions and ideas that came out of the AHC-hosted Canadian Delegates' Luncheon.

Read more and see some photos on our website here, and watch for new strategies and tools that we will be adopting to advocate for an improved response to viral hepatitis in Canada.
We wrote a letter:
AHC Urges Minister Ambrose to Endorse the WHO/PAHO Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Viral Hepatitis

This letter was sent last week to Hon. Minister Ambrose, urging her, as Federal Minister of Health, to endorse the World Health Organization/Pan-American Health Organization Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Viral Hepatitis, on behalf of the Government of Canada. The 67th Session of the Regional Committee of WHO for the Americas will be held in Washington, DC Sept 28-Oct 2 of this year, and the Action Plan will be presented.

Endorsement of this proposed Action Plan would be a great step forward for Canada towards a strategy framed around the goal of elimination.

Hep C Advocacy Working Group

The AHC continues to be involved in the Hep C Advocacy Working Group that was born out of the CLF-led Hep C Stakeholder Summit last fall.

A first meeting was held on September 9th. AHC is represented by Adam Cook from CTAC on this working group, and Administrator Jennifer van Gennip and Policy Analyst Claire Checkland were on the call as well. It was very useful to have the chance to discuss priority areas in Hep C advocacy right now, and gain the perspective of Dr. Feld specifically on current barriers and opportunities.

The following priority areas were determined for the group:
  • Expanded (actionable) screening guidelines
    • PHAC
    • Provincial
    • PHP on board
  • Equitable access to treatment
    • Access to non-invasive liver assessment testing
    • INNES model as a national model?
  • National Hepatitis C Strategy/Action Plan – framed within the goal of elimination
  • Strategies and funding to address research gaps
    • Effectiveness of new treatments
    • Prevention

Another call is planned for October.
Our first provincial members meeting is quickly approaching. The RSVPs are in, the sandwiches are ordered, and we are looking forward to an excellent 1.5 days of meetings to strengthen AHC capacity, share our key messages, get input on national and provincial strategies, and learn from successes in other provinces. We look forward to replicating this meeting in other provinces in 2016!
Next F2F Steering Commitee Meeting
The Steering Committee will meet in Vancouver, BC on November 9-10, 2015, directly preceding the 2nd International Hepatitis Cure and Eradication Meeting.
Action Hepatitis Canada is pleased to have been invited to participate as a partner of the International Hepatitis Cure and Eradication meeting to be held in Vancouver this November.

Why should you attend?
  • International exchange between leading experts in the field of hepatitis treatment and elimination
  • Learn how vaccines, simplifying treatment and public policies to enhance reach and engagement into care hold the promise hepatitis cure and elimination
  • To make a difference in enhancing the field of hepatitis research and policy development
  • This one and a half-day workshop will include lectures, roundtable discussions and debates, with ample time allocated for Q&A sessions.
