  Business Class launches in WA

In January this year, ABCN merged with Melbourne-based Schools Connect Australia (SCA), enabling the national roll-out of the Business Class program under the ABCN name and significantly broadening our reach. Business Class is unique in that it operates on a one-school to one-business ratio. This enables tailored support that targets specific, whole-school challenges over a minimum three-year period.

Foundation update

The Scholarship Foundation hit the ground running this year, welcoming 15 new scholars to the program. Our highest number yet, this latest cohort of students represent NSW, Victoria, Queensland and our first ever recipient from Tasmania – bringing the total number of ABCN scholarships to 41. The increasingly high calibre of applications we receive each year makes the selection process more and more difficult.

Paying it forward

Lisa Phung was one of thousands of refugees who fled Communist Vietnam in the early 1980s. Only three years old when her father was captured by the government for  ‘re-education’, she escaped by boat with her mother and sister, before being rescued at sea 15 days later and transferred to a refugee camp in Hong Kong. They arrived in Australia three years later with only the clothes they were wearing and unable to speak a word of English.

Where are they now?

We were thrilled to receive an update recently from former Fairfield High student, Serena Zhang who took part in GOALS in 2009. Here Serena met her mentor Jill Shapiro from Investec, where the two developed a wonderful connection. A year later, following a request from Serena, ABCN facilitated Year 11 work experience for her at Investec – and several years later she contacted Jill again with news of her Year 12 achievement and acceptance into university.
