News from GDS Church

We are delighted to welcome you to our morning service in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. If you are a visitor, please make yourself known to the welcome team or the minister.

This morning our service will be led by our Minister Peter Barber and Assistant to the Minister Trevor Martindale, assisted by the Worship Team. Today we will continue our sermon series asking “What is Jesus saying to the church?”

We also look forward to sharing in the joy of John and Rachel Walkinshaw, as their daughter Iona Jeanne is baptised during our worship service.

Church Family News

The congregation will be saddened to learn that Alex Chirnside passed away peacefully in the first hour of Monday, 1st July. A service of Thanksgiving and Celebration of Alex's life will be held in the church at GDS Gorgie at 2pm on Saturday, 13th July. Please remember Anne, Alex and the Chirnside family in your prayers at this time.

Events for your diary

Tuesday 23rd July, 7pm. Summer Holiday Club Run-through & Prayer in GDS Gorgie:
Members of the Holiday Club team are reminded that we plan to hold a final run-through of the week and a time of prayer at 7pm on the 23rd July in GDS Gorgie. Members of the congregation who are not part of the team are invited to pray for the Holiday Club from home. Please pray that final preparations would go smoothly, that it would be well attended and that the children will have lots of fun while drawing closer to Jesus through our efforts.

29th July - 2nd August, 10am - 1:15pm. Seaside JAM Holiday Club in GDS Gorgie:
Following on from the success of Jungle JAM last year, our Summer Holiday Club returns in 2019 for children in P1-P7. Expect lots of seaside related fun, games, songs, crafts, drama and puppets as we seek to show the children of Gorgie, Dalry and Stenhouse the love of Jesus and share with them the Good News. If you have primary aged children and would like them to participate, please speak to our Children & Families Outreach Worker, Rachel Cooney after the service, send her an email  at youth@gdschurch.org.uk or fill out one of the sign-up forms which you can find on the table at the back of the church.

Information of note

Youth Group Leaders:
Creche (Yellow Lanyards) - Luke and Emma (in the Small Hall)
Mini JAM (Red Lanyards)- Dandan and Helper (in the Count Room)
JAM Club (Red Lanyards) - Hugo and Shona (in the Large Hall)

Mini JAM:
"Mini-JAM will now be running for those aged 2-5 in the Count Room.  Leaders will be wearing Red Lanyards.  There will be Bible stories, songs, games and other exciting activities.  Please speak with Dandan or contact Rachel for more information or if you have any questions; youth@gdschurch.org.uk."

JAM Club Children:
We invite the children to sit in the front row of the church, on the piano side, with our Youth Group Leaders each Sunday. We welcome any visiting children to join us at the front and to come through for activities in the Large Hall! Please speak with our Youth, Children and Families Worker, Rachel, if you are visiting!

GDS Pastoral Care Group:
Please speak to Peter Barber, Trevor, Zoltan, Tricia, Norma, Sandra, Rachel Cooney or Gill Mclean or email pastoralcare@gdschurch.org.uk for any pastoral care requests. We would be happy to discuss the situation with you. If anyone would like to join the group as an occasional or regular visitor, please speak to Adrian.

GDS Diadem Just Giving Page:
We are now in the process of making GDS Diadem ready to host the Shelter for years to come. The most important improvement that the facilities at Diadem require is an upgrade of the kitchen to a commercial kitchen standard. This will make preparing meals for up to 75 sleepers each night far easier for the many volunteer catering teams. In order to start fundraising for this project, Susan kay has kindly set up a Just Giving page. If you would like to support the project to turn GDS Diadem into a home for the Care Shelter in a financial way, please consider donating via this page. www.justgiving.com/campaign/diadem

Summer at Saltyard:
Please note that, from 2nd July to the 10th August, Saltyard will be open from 10am-4pm each day, rather than the usual 9-5 on weekdays. In previous years, Saltyard has closed for a Summer Break. This year we have decided to stay open all through the Summer, so please come and enjoy the café with your friends and family. Also, if you have ever thought about volunteering at Saltyard, there’s no better time to give it a try! The Team would really value a few extra willing hands to help cover staff holidays over the Summer.

Finance Update:
There has been a significant reduction in the congregation's income in the first five months of the current year.  The offerings for the first five months amounted to £25,999, compared to £30,352 in the corresponding period last year.
The offerings amount to £5,200 per month and this compares with a payment to Central Funds for Ministry and Mission costs of £4,452 per month.  Please review your givings and support the work of the church through your offerings.
If you want information about giving directly through the bank or with Free Will Offering envelopes then please ask for more information.  If you pay income tax then please consider signing a Gift Aid form so that the church can recover income tax on your offerings.
