This week was a momentous occasion for healthcare in Ireland as preparation for the construction of the new children's hospital began. Minister for Health, Simon Harris, and hospital chiefs were present when preparations of the site began. The site at the campus of St James's Hospital will bring the three children's hospitals under one roof for the first time. This development will result in a world-class building which will enable staff to deliver the best possible clinical care for children and young people, while also seeking to provide a pleasant environment for staff and families.

The hospital is expected to open on 2020, containing 380 single in-patient rooms, 42 beds in a critical care unit and 18 neonatal critical care units.
