The Professional Development Lead Support Programme (Primary) 

Dates: tbc
Venue: George Spencer Academy
Cost: Free
This is a fantastic opportunity to gain NCETM Accredited PD Lead Status.This is a development programme for existing and aspiring Professional Development Leads consisting of two face to face days with a gap task in between involving planning, running and evaluating a PD event for other teachers. Participants will be asked to complete a PD Lead Planning, Evaluation and Reflection Framework document and their written submission using this framework will be assessed according to set criteria. Successful participants will receive NCETM accredited PD Lead status.

Following this very well received course last year we are repeating it. This course is suitable for TAs supporting KS2 and 3 pupils. The two sessions concentrate on developing arithmetic fluency by using manipulatives and building up formal algorithms in line with the teaching for mastery.

As the teaching for mastery movement matures we have a number of schools in our region that are well underway in terms of the teaching and leadership of this area of the curriculum and celebrating positive impacts on pupil outcomes and attitudes to learning mathematics. These schools will be opening their doors to allow you to see it in action, ask questions of teachers, leaders and students and develop your own supportive network should you wish to pursue teaching for mastery further.

Teaching maths for conceptual understanding

Dates: 9 half day sessions running from 12:45 – 16:30
11 November, 30 November, 11 January, 9 February, 9 March, 23 March, 23 May, 6 June, 27 June and 12 July
Venue: Cotgrave Candleby Lane School
Cost: £100
Building on a highly successful pilot this innovative new CPD programme aims to provide those within the first five years of their career with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of Mathematics and truly develop mastery of teaching maths. This programme aims to support participants to develop as outstanding maths teachers, champions of the subject within your school and potentially grow to become a maths leader.

The sessions will focus on some vital areas of mathematics: multiplication, division and fractions. There will also be a close relationship with the aims of the new National Curriculum; with the themes of fluency, reasoning and problem solving running throughout the project.

The project will run in three main blocks of three half day sessions, and a key feature of each block will be the opportunity to plan collaboratively and trial pedagogical approaches with children in Cotgrave Candleby Lane School.

The project has been designed and will be delivered through a partnership between Specialist Leaders of Education and Nottingham Trent University, ensuring that the programme is absolutely relevant to the needs and demands of today’s classrooms, whilst grounded in current research and thinking.

Teacher Subject Specialist Training Programme for Maths or Physics

Launch Event: Wednesday 28 September 2016, 16:00 – 18:00 
Venue: George Spencer Academy
Dates: 5 day programme between October 2016 and March 2017 - see website for dates
Working with Nottingham Trent University and the Institute of Physics, we will be repeating this successful course that will develop teachers' subject and pedagogical knowledge to enable them to teach 11-16 mathematics or physics with confidence. Targeted at all Key Stages including:
  • Further Education
  • Primary trained teachers now working in secondary teaching
  • FE Tutors teaching Levels 1 and 2 maths or numeracy
  • Teachers currently teaching out of specialism in Maths or Physics
  • Teachers returning after a break from teaching.
