EARLY YEARS PROGRAMMES

Introduction to mastery in early years

Dates: 22 November to be repeated on January 13, March 6 and April 27
Venue: George Spencer Academy
Full Day
Cost: £25 per school

Within this introduction to mastery in the Early Years, we explore the principles of mastery in the context of everyday early years practice. We present a simple model for considering mastery in early years, which is consistent with the EYFS curriculum, and apply it to examples of child-initiated and adult-led learning experiences.

"We have been given some brilliant ideas to help our children become masters of mathematics."

PRIMARY PROGRAMMES

Depth

Dates: Tuesday 1 November 2016, 09:30 – 15:30 and Tuesday 15 November 2016, 13:00 – 16:00
Venue: George Spencer Academy
Cost: £75 per school
This 2-session course aims to provide clues on what it means to deepen a learner's understanding. We will consider the design of a lesson so that all children can be taught at the same pace whilst also providing appropriate challenge for all. More than the traditional 'challenge for more able pupils' the course will be thinking about subtle changes to a question and what differences it makes to the pupil and their understanding.

Building on a highly successful pilot this innovative new CPD programme aims to provide those within the first five years of their career with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of Mathematics and truly develop mastery of teaching maths. This programme aims to support participants to develop as outstanding maths teachers, champions of the subject within your school and potentially grow to become a maths leader.

The sessions will focus on some vital areas of mathematics: multiplication, division and fractions. There will also be a close relationship with the aims of the new National Curriculum; with the themes of fluency, reasoning and problem solving running throughout the project.

The project will run in three main blocks of three half day sessions, and a key feature of each block will be the opportunity to plan collaboratively and trial pedagogical approaches with children in Cotgrave Candleby Lane School.

The project has been designed and will be delivered through a partnership between Specialist Leaders of Education and Nottingham Trent University, ensuring that the programme is absolutely relevant to the needs and demands of today’s classrooms, whilst grounded in current research and thinking.

SECONDARY PROGRAMMES

Cross Phase Multiplicative Reasoning

Dates: 25 November 2016, 28 March 2017, 20 June 2017 - Full Days
Venue: George Spencer Academy
Cost: £200 per cluster
A 3-day course where primary and secondary colleagues work together in established clusters to investigate the teaching of multiplicative reasoning through a variety of methods. An opportunity for staff to develop their own subject knowledge, specifically of multiplicative structures and the proportion. The course will allow staff to develop their pedagogy through using visual methods in their teaching throughout the Maths curriculum. This should improve how students tackle unseen problems and improve their perseverance. The course should provide techniques which open up more of the curriculum to students who have been seen as lower ability in the past. This course is aimed at KS2, KS3 and KS4 teachers.

"I will now be using misconception questions to inform my teaching."
"I will be using the bar method to explain how to solve problems."
