Go Green with AMP

Have you heard about Alameda Municipal Power’s (AMP’s) Alameda Green program?  For as little as $15 per month, Alameda business owners can reduce their carbon footprint by purchasing renewable energy from AMP. When you enroll your business in Alameda Green, you can match up to 100 percent of your monthly electricity use with clean, renewable energy from wind projects in the western United States and solar projects right here in California. More than 70 local businesses have already signed up to receive their Alameda Green certification, as well as over 2,000 Alameda homes

To celebrate Alameda’s green businesses, Alameda Municipal Power is sponsoring a Shop Clean and Local Week. From Sunday, October 2nd to Saturday, October 8th, residents are encouraged to show their support of clean energy by visiting Alameda’s green businesses. This event is part of Public Power Week, a week-long celebration of community-owned utilities like AMP. Visit the Alameda Green website, or meet AMP folks in person at the Downtown Alameda Business Association’s Classic Car Show on October 8 to learn more about the program. AMP representatives will also be at the South Shore Center, the Alameda Main Library, and other locations throughout the week.

#LoveOurIsland Campaign Launches

Last week City Council members, School Board members, the Alameda Chamber of Commerce, and over 100 residents joined together at City Hall to celebrate what they love most about Alameda. From our businesses to our schools to our ice cream, Alamedans have a lot of love for the island. The celebration was the launch of a new campaign, #LoveOurIsland, an ongoing way to connect with the City and hear about all the positive things happening right here at home. Planning for a Healthy Economy in Alameda

The City of Alameda recently held its first community workshop for creating the citywide Economic Development Strategic Plan (EDSP).  The workshop, on Thursday, September 22, was an excellent opportunity for community members to hear and join the public discussion about what Alameda should do to maintain and grow a vibrant local economy.
The EDSP will be the City’s long-term (five to ten years) roadmap for business attraction, retention, and workforce development activities, while improving the quality of life for Alameda residents and employees.  Discussion topics at the workshop included trends in job and industry growth, performance of retail, restaurants, offices, and industrial parks, and opportunities for strengthening the local economy.

Please join us for the next workshop on December 8, 2016. For more information, contact Eric Fonstein, Development Manager, at 510-747-6895,, or visit

City Sponsors Holiday Season Job Fair

The holiday season is already upon us! It may only be October, but retailers have to start planning now to make sure they have the staff they’ll need during the busiest time of the year.
To help out, the City of Alameda is co-sponsoring a second annual Holiday Season Job Fair on Wednesday, October 19, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Alameda Landing Shopping Center (near Famous Dave’s) in Alameda.  This is an excellent opportunity for local store owners and managers to fill their seasonal hiring needs at one event.  Last year, 22 businesses participated, drawing over 300 job seekers.
The Job Fair will have hiring representatives for stores at Alameda Landing, South Shore Shopping Center, and other local employers.  The businesses will be recruiting for various positions, such as cashiers, sales floor associates, and merchandise stocking.  Job seekers should come prepared with resumes and dressed in interview-appropriate attire.
The event is co-sponsored by the City of Alameda, the College of Alameda’s One Stop Career Center, the South Shore Shopping Center, Alameda Landing, and the Alameda Chamber of Commerce.  For more information, contact Eric Fonstein with the City of Alameda at 510-747-6895 or
