Southern Oregon Sound took a break from rehearsals this summer. While we continue to search for a new Director, some of us have joined forces with the local men’s barbershop chorus, Rogue Voices, to prepare for some holiday performances at retirement communities in December. We had joined with them for performances last holiday season and already had learned a few SATB songs. We’re adding to that repertoire with more holiday SATB songs. We’re even learning some of their TTBB songs by singing the Lead and Tenor parts (an octave lower than written)! The basses are enjoying singing the melody line for a change (ha-ha). It’s been fun to continue working with their Director, Bill Borah, who helped us out in rehearsals to prepare for last May’s contest. It’s always a treat to sing with the guys when we can, so working toward a common goal of bringing smiles to local folks has boosted our enthusiasm.

August was full of “Sun, Shade and Singing” for SOS. With hats, sunglasses, sandals and Hawaiian shirts galore, we worked on a variety of songs, including “Fever”- and the August heat helped to set the mood. We’re continuing to focus on our personal vocal skills, breathing exercises, phonation and resonance exercises. We took the opportunity to put these into practice with our Innie-Mini performances. Dividing into two choruses, Cat Style and Summer Set, we performed for one another and had a fabulous evening. It was tremendous fun with lots of laughter, energy and enthusiasm as well as an opportunity to wear costumes! We’re also busy planning our Spaghetti and Singing pasta dinner fundraiser on October 15. It’s great to know we can be together again and provide the joy of singing to those around us. Watch for details on our Facebook page!

And of course, we are so happy to have the first regional event after three l..o..n..g years! We thank everyone who worked tirelessly to put on a wonderful Barbershop Blast AIM weekend and Pep Rally and the great education provided by Nikki Blackmer. Sending love and best wishes to LiveWire, Equilibrium, and Pacific Empire Chorus as they hit the stage in Phoenix. We’re proud to be so well represented! And, we are loving our new regional song, “Why We Sing”, as it captures exactly how we feel. We are eagerly anticipating our watch party and will be cheering everyone on from Sonoma County!

The AIM Weekend and Pep Rally were a Blast! Many singers enjoyed the classes, singing tags and Nikki Blackmer, most of all. We were delighted to entertain you and help with the send-off for our competitors in Phoenix – Pacific Empire Chorus and Equilibrium and LiveWire! We enjoyed all the tributes, especially Bay Area Showcase Chorus’ parody with audience participation.

During August we have been enjoying several guests: Cyndi Sharp, a longtime member and former DVC director, has been seen gracing our risers once again, this time singing bari! Cyndi is a member of Region 12’s teaching and coaching faculty, Region 12 Young Women in Harmony Program Manager, and Mountain Harmony Camp Director. Also visiting us have been: Barbara Abernathy, Shelley Anderson (visiting from Pacific Coast Harmony Chorus, Oceanside), Isha Dusseau, Mindy Hamway (started in July), Michelle Bellusci (started in June), Virginie Bossu, Kevran Day (started in June), and Summer Larson.
Attention Region 12 Quartets:
Erin Howden will be in town and available for quartet coaching
Once again, Erin Howden will be coaching DVC all day Sunday, October 30 as well as the evenings of Oct 31 and Nov 1. She will be available during the day on Monday the 31st and Tuesday Nov 1st for quartet coaching. If your quartet is interested, contact Mary Dean Heil at hfam25@aol.com.

Also, mark your calendars for October 8th. DVC is hosting “Quartetting 101” which will be a fun day set aside to learn about quartetting. No experience is necessary! There will be classes in the morning and a quartet mix and match activity in the afternoon. Advanced registration is $20, which includes lunch!

What a fun August! Early in month, we did our official contract signing with Julie and then celebrated her 20th anniversary as our director with gifts and cupcakes! Georgia Sutherland put together a wonderful photo book with highlights of the years Julie has been with us.
August also saw us spending a lot of time preparing for and performing at the Pep Rally, for which Bay Area Showcase was the producing chorus. Our talented member Jackie Levy put together a great script, and she and Maggie Harris did a wonderful job of narrating the event. Several members contributed to a parody tribute to our honorees. Our creative member Mary Kramer provided great decorations for the space theme of "A Barbershop Blast!" Roberta Marton provided thematic headwear as well. The whole chorus contributed to making it a great event.
We enjoyed taking part in the in-person AIM weekend as a whole. Nikki Blackmer offered a number of classes, as did our regional faculty members Kathy Scheel, Chris Jacobs, and our director, Julie Starr. It was great to be back with our singing sisters to experience the camaraderie of being together.
In the weeks following AIM, we have been working on a new song as well as brushing up on a number of songs in our repertoire in preparation for a December show. We have been continuing to work on building our barbershop skills, and we have had a number of guests visit our rehearsals in recent weeks. This week, Julie is at International (so exciting that it is in person this year), so chorus leadership will be running the rehearsal while sending support and encouragement to Pacific Empire Chorus, LiveWire, and Equilibrium!

Singers from all over Region 12 (plus a few from Regions 11 and 13) had our first Zoom rehearsal of the songs we’ll perform at the London Harmony Festival. So far, we have members from Oregon Spirit, High Desert Harmony, Na Leo Lani, San Francisco Soundwave, Pride of Portland, Lady Luck Showtime, and Chapter-at-Large – but there’s still time for YOU to sign up for this exciting opportunity to combine two great things: travel and singing. So go to the Harmony Travel website: www.harmony-travel.net for lots more information. Register soon so the planners at Harmony Travel will know how to plan for hotel rooms, buses, meals, tour stops, etc. Additional information about the deposit, cancellation policy, and travel insurance is also shown on their website. When you are registered, be sure to send a note to me at kathy.scheel60@gmail.com so I can put you on my email list for updates about songs and rehearsals. As one of the members of the chorus recently said, if you’ve been on the fence about deciding, let me give you a gentle shove towards YES because one of the best parts of going on a trip like this is meeting new friends that you’ll share the experience with and cherish for a lifetime. Our next Zoom rehearsal is Friday, September 9, so I look forward to welcoming more of you then!
I sure look forward to hearing from lots of you soon!

In harmony, Kathy Scheel
