REGIONAL NEWS
Finance Coordinator Update

THANK YOU !  THANK YOU!  THANK YOU!
It was a wonderful Fall AIM Weekend!  Thank you for the wonderful response to our first 'in-person' event in almost 3 years.  We had over 180 attend the classes with International Faculty Nikki Blackmer and our own Regional Faculty.

Thank you for your generosity:  We collected over $600 for our Young Women In Harmony and also added some to our general fund which helps pay for future educational events.
See you at LAW School in October and Winter AIM in January!

Regional Education Coordinator Update

Region 12 Education- Laughter, Learning and LIVE!

Region 12 Education is back in-person, and does it sure feel good! Our summer has been a busy one with not one, but two in-person educational events! We were fortunate enough to host L.A.W. School in Eugene in late July and Fall AIM with Nikki Blackmer in mid-August. Both events were fun, and successful. What a joy it was to see so many of our regional friends and share our love of singing together once again.

Thank you to all Region 12 members who attended both L.A.W. School and/or Fall AIM, as well as anyone who donated to the region. Your support is invaluable!

We have two more fantastic educational events coming up this fall to round out the end of 2022, so be sure to mark your calendars:

L.A.W. School- Saturday, October 29th
Location- Center for Spiritual Awareness
Sacramento, CA

YWIH Event- Saturday, November 5th
Location- Center for Spiritual Awareness
Sacramento, CA

More details to follow soon!

With a song,

Alison Miller

Regional Convention Volunteers Needed

The Regional Convention Steering Committee (RCSC) has started meeting to begin preparations for the 2023 Convention.  There are a few positions that need to be filled on the team to help make the Convention a success.
  1. Boutique Coordinator.  We need someone who can manage the boutique.  This involves contacting and securing vendors for the weekend, completing all the necessary state forms for taxes, setting up the boutique area, submitting information to the Finance Coordinator, and finalizing a report for the convention.
  2. Quartet Stroll Coordinator.  This person will contact the competing quartets and coordinate the patterns for their stroll to various chorus rooms and parties.
  3. Facility Coordinator.  This person works with the Competition Coordinator, Official Panel Liaison, Site Coordinator, and Events Coordinator to manage the ballroom during convention events.  It involves working with the ballroom lights, responding to needs of the official panel, and communicating with the Competition Coordinator to make sure all is running smoothly.
  4. Housing Coordinator.  Primarily this responsibility occurs prior to the convention. It involves communicating with the staff at the Nugget to determine the procedures for room reservations and communicating that to the chorus coordinators.

Prior coordinators or volunteers are available to help train anyone who wants to volunteer in any of these positions.  If you are interested, please contact Mary Mamer at marymamer1976@gmail.com
Regional Events Coordinator Position
RMT Applications for Term May 1, 2023 to April 30, 2025

It is time for the Events Coordinator position to be turned over to someone new.  The person would take over officially in May of 2023 after the convention.  This is an involved position on the Regional Management Team.  This person needs to be well organized and have strong communication skills.  They will need to work well with other members of the Regional Management Team, members of the organization, and members of the community. This is a very brief description.  Training and consultation will be available to the person in this position as needed after May 1st of 2023.  Applications are available on the Regional Website at RMT Coordinators Application 2022-2024 (1007.5kb).  If interested please complete the application form and send to Kristen Skold, Regional Communications Coordinator.  If you would like to ask more questions about this position contact me at marymamer1976@gmail.com

Regional Historian Position

I want to take this opportunity to thank Georgia Sutherland for serving 22 years as our Regional Historian. She took our memories from physical scrapbooks to online slideshows and the gorgeous printed books she's made the last several years. We so appreciate the time and talents she put into the work.

We are now looking for someone to take over this position. It's an ideal project for a scrapbooker who's comfortable posting photos online and has experience (or is looking for an excuse to try) online printable book services.

For more information, or to volunteer, please contact Kristen Skold, communications.coord@sairegion12.org

CHAPTER CHATS
In August, Sacramento Valley Chorus took a vacation. We start up again on September 21st all rested and ready to go.

On September 28th we start our Harmony Academy with our first guest night of 10. We are looking forward to many guests interested in learning more about SVC, SAI, and being a part of our Winter Holiday Show in December.

We would like to wish all of Region 12's International competitors the best of luck. We will be watching and cheering you all on. Best wishes too to our SVC dual members with PEC - Nancy Maas, Alison Miller, Desiree Hughart, Valerie Richie, Sandy Cope, and Kerry Kaempf-Wood.

Thank you, Sweet Adelines International, for putting on a webcast so that we can all watch from home. We are so excited to see and hear 4-part harmony again.

High Desert Harmony was so glad to participate in the Region's first in-person AIM in more than two years, and we were especially excited to serve as the host chorus! Fifteen of our 23 members travelled to Sacramento for Fall AIM, held August 19-20, to handle the registration process as well as attend sessions. Our amazing team coordinator, Brooke Cholka, did a great job organizing all the many details and had fun with the event's space-age theme, "A Barbershop Blast," with super-cute registration materials and table decorations. Our coaching session with the wonderful Nikki Blackmer was a real treat -- she was so positive and had so many valuable insights. It was a great weekend! We send all our best wishes to the choruses and quartets on their way to Phoenix!

HDH welcomed two new members in August as well: Aimee Keys (lead) and Kat Olson (baritone). These ladies are a wonderful addition to our HDH family!

Happy September, Sisters in Harmony!

It’s been a hot and busy summer. RLC has been continuing rehearsals and learning new music for our holiday event. We got the best summer gift as we welcomed new member Jaela Brown!

We can’t wait to watch the performers take the stage at International Competition. Sending best wishes to all choruses and quartets who will be competing.
We have been busy! We have some big events coming up this month and into October.  All summer long we have been rehearsing, learning new songs and getting ready for a busy fall season. Here are our events. Tell a friend and come visit us!

Guest Night Open Rehearsal:
Monday, September 19, 2022; 7-9:30 pm
Hill and Valley Women’s Club
1808 B Street, Hayward
(Just off 580 in Castro Valley/Hayward region)

At this special interactive rehearsal, visitors will experience what it’s like to sing in the barbershop style as a member of Harmony Fusion. After a meet and greet, guests will join members on the risers to experience the joy of “ringing chords” together. Guests who are interested in further exposure to our singing style will have the opportunity to attend future rehearsals and learn one full arrangement to perform at our show on October 29, 2022.

Mark your calendar for our fall show!
“Back By Popular Demand”
Saturday, Oct. 29, 3pm
Our Savior Lutheran Church, Livermore

Featuring “Solstice,” a female vocal ensemble and the Bay Area Regional Champions and national third-place winners of the 2007 Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival, plus quartets including With A Twist, and more!

August was not only a hot month, but it was a busy one for Mission Valley. We were hard at work preparing for our summer social, “It was a Hot August Night…”, but we had to cancel. Not wanting to let the ice cream go to waste, we held an informal ice cream social and performed for our family and friends. There was enough ice cream for everyone to have two servings!

Our Woman of Note for July is someone who embodies the definition of “above and beyond”. Carol has diligently worked to get MVC to sing at the San Jose Giants game last month which raised about $600 for the chorus. Thank you and congratulations, Carol Gerwitz!

We have two new members this month! New lead Karen Zhang whose Big Sister is Maggie Harris; and new baritone Grace Guo whose Big Sister is Harriett Feltman!  Welcome Karen and Grace!

We had a blast performing in Sacramento at the Pep Rally to send our Region 12 competitors to Phoenix. Best of luck to Pacific Empire Chorus, LiveWire Quartet and Equilibrium Quartet.

We had a fabulous all-day coaching session with Deke Sharon on August 27th.  The theme for the day centered around singing with emotion to engage the audience, that we are the instruments, and that we need to embody the emotion to bring the “story” of the song to light.  It was amazing to watch the live, collaborative interaction between Deke and Angela.  Everyone walked away with a jewel, and we are looking forward to polishing and putting into action what we learned.

MVC closed out the month with a COOL surprise.  On August 23rd, Angela arranged to have the left-over ice cream from our ice cream social brought to rehearsal. We had an outdoor “mask-off” break and came back inside to a variety of ice cream…sandwiches, push-ups and some on sticks. Yay for surprises!! Thanks, Angela!

Southern Oregon Sound took a break from rehearsals this summer.  While we continue to search for a new Director, some of us have joined forces with the local men’s barbershop chorus, Rogue Voices, to prepare for some holiday performances at retirement communities in December.  We had joined with them for performances last holiday season and already had learned a few SATB songs.  We’re adding to that repertoire with more holiday SATB songs.  We’re even learning some of their TTBB songs by singing the Lead and Tenor parts (an octave lower than written)!  The basses are enjoying singing the melody line for a change (ha-ha).  It’s been fun to continue working with their Director, Bill Borah, who helped us out in rehearsals to prepare for last May’s contest.  It’s always a treat to sing with the guys when we can, so working toward a common goal of bringing smiles to local folks has boosted our enthusiasm.

August was full of “Sun, Shade and Singing” for SOS. With hats, sunglasses, sandals and Hawaiian shirts galore, we worked on a variety of songs, including “Fever”- and the August heat helped to set the mood. We’re continuing to focus on our personal vocal skills, breathing exercises, phonation and resonance exercises. We took the opportunity to put these into practice with our Innie-Mini performances.  Dividing into two choruses, Cat Style and Summer Set, we performed for one another and had a fabulous evening. It was tremendous fun with lots of laughter, energy and enthusiasm as well as an opportunity to wear costumes! We’re also busy planning our Spaghetti and Singing pasta dinner fundraiser on October 15. It’s great to know we can be together again and provide the joy of singing to those around us. Watch for details on our Facebook page!

And of course, we are so happy to have the first regional event after three l..o..n..g years! We thank everyone who worked tirelessly to put on a wonderful Barbershop Blast AIM weekend and Pep Rally and the great education provided by Nikki Blackmer. Sending love and best wishes to LiveWire, Equilibrium, and Pacific Empire Chorus as they hit the stage in Phoenix. We’re proud to be so well represented! And, we are loving our new regional song, “Why We Sing”, as it captures exactly how we feel. We are eagerly anticipating our watch party and will be cheering everyone on from Sonoma County!

The AIM Weekend and Pep Rally were a Blast!   Many singers enjoyed the classes, singing tags and Nikki Blackmer, most of all.  We were delighted to entertain you and help with the send-off for our competitors in Phoenix – Pacific Empire Chorus and Equilibrium and LiveWire!  We enjoyed all the tributes, especially Bay Area Showcase Chorus’ parody with audience participation.

DVC preparing for AIM at a recent rehearsal

Rhapsody at AIM: Kim Machek, Julie Baxter,
Jeanette Smith, and Andi Giles

During August we have been enjoying several guests:  Cyndi Sharp, a longtime member and former DVC director, has been seen gracing our risers once again, this time singing bari! Cyndi is a member of Region 12’s teaching and coaching faculty, Region 12 Young Women in Harmony Program Manager, and Mountain Harmony Camp Director.   Also visiting us have been:  Barbara Abernathy, Shelley Anderson (visiting from Pacific Coast Harmony Chorus, Oceanside), Isha Dusseau, Mindy Hamway (started in July), Michelle Bellusci (started in June), Virginie Bossu, Kevran Day (started in June), and Summer Larson.

Attention Region 12 Quartets:

Erin Howden will be in town and available for quartet coaching

Once again, Erin Howden will be coaching DVC all day Sunday, October 30 as well as the evenings of Oct 31 and Nov 1.  She will be available during the day on Monday the 31st and Tuesday Nov 1st for quartet coaching.  If your quartet is interested, contact Mary Dean Heil at hfam25@aol.com.

Also, mark your calendars for October 8th.  DVC is hosting “Quartetting 101” which will be a fun day set aside to learn about quartetting.  No experience is necessary!  There will be classes in the morning and a quartet mix and match activity in the afternoon. Advanced registration is $20, which includes lunch!

What a fun August! Early in month, we did our official contract signing with Julie and then celebrated her 20th anniversary as our director with gifts and cupcakes! Georgia Sutherland put together a wonderful photo book with highlights of the years Julie has been with us.

August also saw us spending a lot of time preparing for and performing at the Pep Rally, for which Bay Area Showcase was the producing chorus. Our talented member Jackie Levy put together a great script, and she and Maggie Harris did a wonderful job of narrating the event. Several members contributed to a parody tribute to our honorees. Our creative member Mary Kramer provided great decorations for the space theme of "A Barbershop Blast!" Roberta Marton provided thematic headwear as well. The whole chorus contributed to making it a great event.

We enjoyed taking part in the in-person AIM weekend as a whole. Nikki Blackmer offered a number of classes, as did our regional faculty members Kathy Scheel, Chris Jacobs, and our director, Julie Starr. It was great to be back with our singing sisters to experience the camaraderie of being together.

In the weeks following AIM, we have been working on a new song as well as brushing up on a number of songs in our repertoire in preparation for a December show. We have been continuing to work on building our barbershop skills, and we have had a number of guests visit our rehearsals in recent weeks. This week, Julie is at International (so exciting that it is in person this year), so chorus leadership will be running the rehearsal while sending support and encouragement to Pacific Empire Chorus, LiveWire, and Equilibrium!

Singers from all over Region 12 (plus a few from Regions 11 and 13) had our first Zoom rehearsal of the songs we’ll perform at the London Harmony Festival.  So far, we have members from Oregon Spirit, High Desert Harmony, Na Leo Lani, San Francisco Soundwave, Pride of Portland, Lady Luck Showtime, and Chapter-at-Large – but there’s still time for YOU to sign up for this exciting opportunity to combine two great things: travel and singing. So go to the Harmony Travel website:  www.harmony-travel.net for lots more information.  Register soon so the planners at Harmony Travel will know how to plan for hotel rooms, buses, meals, tour stops, etc.  Additional information about the deposit, cancellation policy, and travel insurance is also shown on their website.  When you are registered, be sure to send a note to me at kathy.scheel60@gmail.com so I can put you on my email list for updates about songs and rehearsals.  As one of the members of the chorus recently said, if you’ve been on the fence about deciding, let me give you a gentle shove towards YES because one of the best parts of going on a trip like this is meeting new friends that you’ll share the experience with and cherish for a lifetime.  Our next Zoom rehearsal is Friday, September 9, so I look forward to welcoming more of you then!

I sure look forward to hearing from lots of you soon!
