CHAPTER CHATS
Every July, Reno turns into "Artown," with each day of the month filled with all manner of performances, from music to drama, dance to visual art. And most of them are free!

High Desert Harmony is looking forward to being part of Artown again this year and sharing our love of barbershop music with the community with our presentation of "Harmony in the Park: A Celebration of Barbershop Music," on Sat., July 16th at Wingfield Park in Downtown Reno. We'll be joined by the men's Silver Dollar Chorus and several fantastic quartets, including the Summertimers. It will be great fun, so please join us if you're in Reno on the 16th!

We were also at Wingfield Park at the end of June for the Sierra Arts Festival, joined by the amazing Free Range quartet! It was a great warm-up to Artown!

Oregon Spirit Chorus has sure been on a “high” for the last several weeks!  We had such a great experience at our long-awaited Region 12 Competition in May, where we earned the Most Improved Chorus Award (which was our goal), and also the award for largest membership growth.  It has been such a delight to have so many new members sharing this whole experience with us for the first time.

June was our first big show in several years - Voices in Harmony was presented along with our brothers in harmony, the Oregon SenateAires.  The auditorium was packed, and the audience was eager and very appreciative to see this live show!  All of the groups performed beautifully, and we were so honored to welcome Midtown quartet to Salem; they loved it, and we sure loved them!  We even got them to sing part of a song with us! Goosebumps!!

July is when we’ll invite guests to our Summer Singin’ program, where our Director (Kathy Scheel) and Associate Director (Nancy Kurth) will lead a group voice lesson for guests with some basic vocal skills, teach them a simple new song, and get them on the risers with the chorus to sing along with us.  And, of course, there will be refreshments!  We’ll share our experience with you in the next Chapter Chats e-blast.

Now we’re starting plans to host a local World Singing Day here in Salem on October 15.  This global event is an opportunity to celebrate with singers from all over the state through the international language of music, singing just for the pure joy of it.  We all know that singing is good for the heart and soul, and this will certainly be an uplifting and fun activity!  If you are in the area on that day, come and join in the fun.

As the summer heat returns, MVC is preparing for our summer ice cream social "It was a hot August night..." to be held on Saturday, August 6th at 7pm.  Check our website for more information.

Mission Valley recently joined the Peninsulaires on their June 4th show at Grace Lutheran Church in Palo Alto. We enjoyed singing for this most appreciative audience and for each other. It was a great show and a lot of fun singing with the guys!

Voula hosted a quartet mixer at Susan Wong’s home on Saturday, June 25th. About 14 people showed up to “play” and see how it feels to sing in smaller groups. We concentrated on two songs, How We Sang Today and Take Me Out to the Ball Game. Many thanks to Voula for organizing this fun-filled day.

On June 28th we celebrated chorus anniversaries with desserts and goodies, some brought to us from as far away as New York (thanks, Adele!). It’s always fun to share snacks and conversation after rehearsal.

A reminder that MVC will be singing the National Anthem at the San Jose Giants game on July 16th. Come join us and watch the game! For more information go to our website: missionvalley.org .

Hello Sisters in Harmony!

What a wonderful beginning to the summer we have had here at River Lights. We had a ton of fun at our summer event. It’s always a blessing to sing for our community, and we really love seeing the kiddos playing games and, of course, eating ice cream!

We were also lucky enough to have some wonderful guests attend our guest program, and we had an absolute blast with a quartet/double quartet night!

Sending love and light to all our Region 12 sisters!

June was Joyful for SOS, jam packed with singing, performing, learning and fun. We started the month with a mini-show for a really wonderful, enthusiastic audience, followed by our annual Sweet Adelines celebration. Suzan Lane, who has been extraordinary during Covid and who is always organized, positive and, well, simply amazing, was overwhelmingly voted Sweet Adeline of the Year. Other awards were handed out, including pins-45 years to Linda Gummerson, 10 years to Kris Skold, and Ellen Jakes Kelm, and five years to Celeste Gantz, Nada Hadley, Julie Thomason, Sarah Crawford and Tessa Murray.

We celebrated in the Luther Burbank Center Courtyard with local Martinelli’s sparkling cider, delicious treats and fun giftbags. It was a joyful time, full of happiness and connection, after missing this for the past two years. Christine Lush was bequeathed the ceremonial cape as our Super Sis of the month. She is one of our dedicated choreo team and is supportive of everyone around her. And we love her culinary skills!

We experienced a fantastic weekend with coach Vickie Maybury, as she enhanced our technical tools and artistic elements with character, emotion and joy. The weekend left us energized, invigorated, and excited for the future as we went home to reteach and reinforce our skills. Huge kudos to Diane Pimentel, who not only ferried Vickie from SFO, but drove the Uhaul to move risers, and Kris Skold, who drove the return trip to SFO and recorded and edited all of our sessions so that we can continue to build on our skills.  As we add new music and new tags to our repertoire, we are eagerly anticipating July, designated as our Member Multiplier Month. We can’t wait to share our music, joy and friendship!

Hello lovely Region 12 members! It is great to see your posts after contest weekend with everyone happy and getting back to singing LIVE again in every way. PEC is staying busy getting “tuned up” and is excited for competition in Phoenix in September – only 10 weeks away. Yikes, so much to do!

It’s great to see your choruses coaching again. As you read in June, we coached with the incredible Ron Black in May, and in June, we had a really fun and confidence building coaching weekend with the fabulous Queen Sandy Marron. Sandy talked about keeping the body aligned and keeping the sound open, free and energized in order to sing with constant ring. Man, did we go home happy and humming a few tunes! Next month, we will bump up our visual plans and packages with the wonderful Queen Erin Howden. We can’t wait!

Like all of you, PEC is so very proud of all of our members who hung in there through the pandemic, Zooming and singing outside sometimes in heat, sometimes cold and sometimes in the dark, all that singing in masks, and now enjoying rehearsals LIVE singing together again. Besides our own faithful, we now also have approximately 10 dual members from the Region joining us on the risers. What a blast We cannot express all of our joy that we feel to have other Region 12 members joining us on this exciting adventure. Saturday’s coaching was such a mix of fun singing and having special friends join us to learning and energizing everything up to Sandy style, as well as having Angela Suraci visit and lead some warmups. Dede Nibler was not able to join us Saturday, but she has written to Patty and the chorus, and we feel her support on our journey to Phoenix! We feel all your support from the notes we have received, and it has meant a great deal to us. We just can’t stop smiling and feel energized by our progress.

All we know is we’re happy to be joining the choruses and quartets at our first Int’l back in the saddle, and we’re going to have a “REAL GOOD TIME”! We feel ALIVE! Sending big love and thanks to ALL!

During the month of June, we collected our collective breath after winning Region 12’s chorus competition with a score of 682!  On June 7th we visited Grace Presbyterian Church in Walnut Creek as a possibility for a new rehearsal location.  We all loved it, especially Caitlin!

Caitlin traveled to St. Louis, MO, for Acapellooza, a summer barbershop camp with Debbie Cleveland, Love Notes, Instant Classic, and Masters of Harmony.  What a memorable experience for everyone involved!

With the director away, we were able to work in sections and review choreography.  How cool is that???   We worked on our new ballad, “With You,” from Pippin, and we reviewed our choreo for ‘Almost There,” as we prepare for the Pep Rally, August 20th.

A few members who weren’t able to be with us April 30th have visited us: Stephanie Canessa, Vivian Perry, and Cheryl Young.  Cyndi Sharp, a longtime member and former DVC director, has been seen gracing our risers once again!  Cyndi is a member of Region 12’s teaching and coaching faculty, Region 12 Young Women in Harmony Program Manager, and Mountain Harmony Camp Director. Yea!  She’s ready to audition!

We look forward to coaching with Erin Howden, July 17th at our rehearsal hall.

June was certainly busting out all over for Bay Area Showcase Chorus. As mentioned last time, we started June with a performance at the Sunnyvale Art and Wine festival.  Throughout the month, we continued our guest program, teaching barbershop skills and general vocal training. This guest program culminated in a show at our rehearsal venue that included performances by  BASC, the men's chorus Peninsulaires, and the quartet Shout, Sister, Shout! Five of our guest attendees participated in the show as well. It was so wonderful to perform in front of an audience of over 80 people! BASC also performed an 8-part arrangement of Lida Rose/Will I Ever Tell You together with the Peninsulaires.

We also had a reporter from the Tri City Voice newspaper come to visit one of our rehearsals this month, and we were featured in an article. We finished the month with a goal setting discussion to help us chart our future. It was a great June!

Hello, everyone!

Harmony Travel (Patsy Meiser) has invited me to direct a chorus representing Region 12 at the London Sing in Harmony Festival 2023 just a year from now!  I’m really excited about this opportunity to combine two things I love – singing and travel – as we go on this thrilling adventure.  I’ve heard from about 30 singers from all over Oregon, Washington, and California so far, and I would love to have many more of you come along!  For lots more information, go to the Harmony Travel website:  www.harmony-travel.net .  Go ahead and get registered so you’ll be in the database and will receive regular updates; this really helps the planners at Harmony Travel know how to plan for hotel rooms, buses, meals, tour stops, etc.  Additional information about the deposit, cancellation policy, and travel insurance is also shown on their website.

When you are registered, be sure to send a note to me at kathy.scheel60@gmail.com so I can put you on my email list for updates about songs and rehearsals.  We’ll start off with a few Zoom rehearsals, and then we will have 3 in-person rehearsals here in beautiful Salem, Oregon.  One of the best parts of going on a trip like this is meeting new friends that you’ll share the experience with and cherish for a lifetime.

I sure look forward to hearing from lots of you soon – our first Zoom session is scheduled for Friday, August 12.

In love and harmony, Kathy Scheel
