Change Your Life! Come to AIM!
There’s nobody like Erin Howden!

I have been to two of her A Step Ahead visual conferences in Toronto, and they changed my life as a performer and director! I’ve also witnessed her working with choruses, bringing out the collective best from every single performer, whether they thought they could dance or not. You won’t want to miss a moment of this AIM for your own growth as a performer!
Erin integrates music, poetry, imagination, movement, and emotion in a way that makes what we do as Sweet Adelines feel like magic! This September AIM with Region 12 is no exception. She’s an inspired visual designer and an inspiring speaker, and you’ll go home feeling richer for having been in her classes.

Erin will start on Friday night, September 16, with some of the principles of movement that will really help you make sense out of choreography and visual plans.

On Saturday morning, Erin and Turbulence will show you how to let go of the things that keep you from performing your best, and “imaginer” your way to a fabulous performance. In the afternoon she’ll take you on a journey from spots on paper to heart-touching, Broadway-quality performance, teaching us how to build and integrate all the elements for dynamite performances that bring audiences to their feet.

Directors, urge your choreographers and visual teams to come with you to the Directors’ class on Saturday morning. Building commitment and confidence in our choruses, and building our skills in leading and coaching them, will be the primary topic – and who among us doesn’t need that?

We will NOT be videotaping Erin’s classes, at her request, so if you miss her you’ll miss a lot!

But wait! there’s always more at an AIM weekend!
  • Regional classes with tips for singing your best while dancing, using different learning styles to your benefit, and thinking outside the box in your visual plans
  • Tags with Turbulence on Friday night
  • Tags with Surprise! at breaks on Saturday
  • Lunch forums for Team Coordinators, Finance Coordinators, Directors, Assistant Directors, and all those involved in Marketing, Membership, and Communications for their choruses
  • PVIs (by advance appointment with Birgit Andersen)
  • DCP testing (by advance appointment with Angela Suraci)
  • Performance and coaching of host chorus San Francisco Sound Wave
  • Performance by our new chorus of quartet champions and wild cards, Circle 12
  • Our ever-popular boutique
  • Regional Faculty training
“Send Your Love” will be used in at least one class, so download the sheet music and learning tracks today and be ready to sing this Sweet Adeline classic any time during the weekend.
And of course our spectacular Pep Rally on Saturday night! Let’s show some love to Song of Sonoma, Mission Valley, and Turbulence quartet at our send-off for International in October.

Registration is a bargain, online for $25, or at the door for $30.

Be sure to indicate your class intentions so we’ll have enough chairs and enough handouts!

“Aloha,” smiles and a welcoming lei greeted the women of Oregon Spirit Chorus and their sister singers who will represent the state of Oregon at the 75th anniversary commemorating Pearl Harbor this coming December.

On Saturday, July 23 more than thirty excited, energetic women took to the risers for their first rehearsal of music which they had been independently learning since early spring.  Under the direction of Master Director, Kathy Scheel, magic was made as voices blended in the opening song which expressed the feeling of the day, “Happy Together.”.

Members of six Oregon choruses, one Washington chorus, one California chorus plus six chapter-at-large members will travel to Honolulu in early December (5-9), to lay a wreath at the USS Arizona Memorial and later sing aboard the ‘Mighty Mo’ (battleship USS Missouri).  We are prepared to be awed.  While in Hawaii our expanded chorus will perform for veterans and current military members at various venues.  And there will be a barbershop extravaganza show with three choruses:  Oregon Spirit, Na Leo Lani, and the Masters in Harmony!

This Saturday’s rehearsal was the first of four day-long, intense, and wonderful rehearsals before our November 13th  show, “United We Sing”.  The show, will be a patriotic tribute to veterans and Veteran’s Day, but will also include some Hawaiian fun as we teach our audience how to do the hula!

As a postscript:  This trip to Pearl Harbor will be a very personal journey for one of the singers.  She was born on December 4, 1941 in the hospital at Pearl Harbor Navy Base. She and her mother were evacuated from their rooms to the basement of the hospital for safety during the attack.

Aloha, Kathy Wilson, Oregon Spirit Chorus
There’s Still Time!!!
YES!!  The Silent Auction is back, and The Young Singers Foundation (YSF) Silent Auction is now accepting donations from individuals, quartets and choruses.  If you are one of the creative artistic members in Region 12, please consider donating one or more of your creations to the Silent Auction---or if you know one of those talented people in your community contact them to see if they will support our efforts to raise funds for the Foundation with a donation to the Silent Auction.  Oh! By the way---YOU could donate something such as travel vouchers, a vacation rental for a weekend or week or gift cards from corporations such as Bed, Bath and Beyond, Home Depot, Best Buy, etc.  The sky’s the limit!

Hey choruses we need your help too. Imagine what kind of donation a whole chorus could give.  I’ve seen the beautiful baskets that Region 12 choruses have created to help our quartets and choruses fund their trip to the International stage.
The only requirements are:
  • Retail value of at least $25
  • Must be new unless they are antique in nature
  •     Items of lesser value (gift cards etc.) can be grouped together to meet the minimum value.

Our goal this year is to raise $20,000 at the Silent Auction this year.  The money will be used to enrich the lives of young women by promoting educational and performance opportunities for vocal music within the barbershop style.
Please help us to bring music into the lives of our girls and young women, consider a donation to the Silent Auction or a cash donation to the Young Singers Foundation.

If you have any questions or want additional information please contact me.  I am Donna Prochazka, Region 12 Liaison to the YSF and member of the Silent Auction team.

Red, White, and Blues

Greetings from the Pacific Empire Chorus. Whether you’re performing out in the community, learning new songs, or preparing for competition, we hope you are all having a productive and fun summer. We sure are. On July 1st, we were lucky enough to be part of the entertainment at San Rafael’s Marin County Fair!

We rocked the Three Twins Ice Cream Stage giving a rousing performance right in time for Independence Day. We entertained the audience with everything from Carole King’s “I Feel the Earth Move” to “With A Little Help from my Friends” by the Beatles. The crowd really got going during our rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered”, with many fair goers dancing and singing right along with us. Two of our quartets also performed. The Stevens Sisters took us down memory lane with their crisp, clean singing and Vocal Ventures kept it local with their version of “San Francisco Bay Blues.” We ended our set with a stirring performance of “America, the Beautiful” celebrating the diverse and stunning area (and country) we are lucky enough to call home.

In addition to more community performances in August we are looking forward to coaching from Awesome Joe Connelly and learning new songs for our ‘60s show to be held November 12. We can’t wait to see you all at Pep Rally in September. Until then, enjoy the rest of the lazy, hazy days of summer.

Summertime with Sac Valley!

Sacramento Valley Chorus has had a busy summer- we officially welcomed our esteemed new director, Dede Nibler, in June and celebrated her first night with us in true SVC fashion: a coaching session with the outstanding Carole Persinger! What a way to kick off a new season with our new leader- we loved every minute!

July brought around not only the introduction of new music for the chorus, but our annual performance at the California State Fair at Cal Expo in Sacramento, as well. Our members always enjoy singing at the fair every summer, and look forward to the event each year. We use the performance not only as a way to promote the organization, we also use it as a recruitment opportunity. Our own 2015 Second Place Regional Quartet Winners Fresco entertained the audience with several songs, as well as the Blue Divas. Along with our State Fair performance, we held an all-day Strategic Planning Workshop later in the month. This gave the members a chance to come together, outside our regular rehearsal day, to brainstorm, discuss, and plan for the future- it was highly beneficial for all who attended and we are very pleased with the fantastic ideas that were generated.

Sacramento Valley Chorus is very proud to have accepted the Wildcard invitation to compete in the 2017 Sweet Adelines International Competition, representing Region 12. We are thrilled and delighted to once again be participating in the exciting preparation that is “international contest.” As fall approaches, and the weather starts to cool down a bit, SVC will continue to work hard each week to improve our musical excellence. We are looking forward to the upcoming months and seeing our Region 12 friends in September at AIM!

San Francisco Sound Wave

SF Sound Wave has had an exciting first have of the year with Diane Myrick our Director celebrating her 18th anniversary with Sweet Adeline International.  We are inspired by her amazing leadership and guidance every day.  Chorus members with backgrounds in folk, classical, musical theater and more organized to compete in the “Harmony Sweepstakes” this year as “Six in the City”.   Members:  Alisa Peters, Kelly Sopher, Molly Sopher, Michelle McGinnis, Aliza Gutman, Dana Manochi.  Our chorus was there to cheer on our members plus one family member who rounded out the group as they competed this year.  So much fun!
