Crufts is one of the largest dog events in the world. No longer purely a dog show, Crufts celebrates every aspect of the role that dogs play in our lives. It has changed in ways that couldn’t possibly have been imagined when the show was set up in Victorian times by the late Charles Cruft. Although it was a very different event in 1891 Charles Cruft was a great showman and would surely have enjoyed the size and scope of the event today, which is an essential date in any dog lover’s calendar. The dog show is still an important part of the event, celebrating the unique relationship that dogs share with their owners. Judges are trained to ensure that only healthy dogs win prizes, which in turn encourages the breeding of healthy dogs. But the event is now about so much more besides. Crufts is ultimately a celebration of all dogs. It celebrates working dogs, which are fit and healthy enough to perform the jobs for which they were originally bred, such as those in the Gamekeeper classes or which line up for the Police Dog Team Operational and Humanitarian Action of the Year award, and it hails hero dogs through the Friends for Life competition. Rescue dogs are celebrated in the rescue dog agility competition and the speed and agility of dogs is celebrated in the ever popular competitions of Flyball and Heelwork to Music. For prospective dog owners and dog lovers, Crufts is a prime opportunity to talk to Kennel Club Assured Breeders, rescue charities and breed experts about how to responsibly buy, train and enjoy life with your dog. And of course, with hundreds of trade stands selling anything and everything for dogs and dog lovers, it is a shopping extravaganza!

Behind the Scene

Vicki Fierheller
Fourhall Maltese, Ontario

Vicki 40 years ago with Judge Aldon Garland

1) If you could have another breed, what would it be?
Maybe a "wash and wear" breed for a change, I do like Yorkshire Terriers.

2) What was the last movie you saw at a theatre?
I saw Star Wars "Rogue One". It was so “déjà vu” moment as I saw it on a Saturday AM. When we came out of the theatre, we found out that Carrie Fisher had passed away that very morning. It was the strangest, saddest feeling.

3) If you could only attend one “must do” show a year, what would it be?
Believe it or not, I have never been to Westminster.  When I win the lottery, I plan to go. Crufts is another "someday" show I'd like to do.

4) What show in Canada have you attended that always gives that little extra to their exhibitor’s, which makes it your favorite to attend?
Quite frankly, I find most of the shows around here pretty generic.  One show that sounds like a ton of fun is the Woofstock show in CA where everyone dresses up "hippy" style.

5) What is you favorite dog of all time?
I have a lot of favorites, but will tell you about my first one I remember when I was a teenager. It was the Chow Chow: Mi-Tu's Han Su Shang that Fred Peddie and Herb Williams showed circa 1972. Shang took my breath away and was such a good ambassador for the breed.

6) What is a favorite grooming product or tool that you will not be without?
It's something called "elbow grease", LOL!  There are no shortcuts when doing a Maltese and they require many products and tools.

7) How do you pick which shows you attend?
Judges, location and yes, weather for those outdoor shows.

8) Beside your dogs, what other animals do you have?
At the moment just my dogs, but my childhood list is quite long.

9) What is your favorite beverage?
Anything is good on a beautiful beach of a tropical island!

10) Name something that is on your “life” bucket list to do?
I love to travel, so hope to keep doing at least one trip a year.

The Fancy Speaks

Throughout the year there are seminar's put on for many breeds across the country by breed clubs, individual judges study groups, and the national judges group CDJA.

Should the CKC or the CDJA have a mentor's program in place?

Should there be certain criteria and guidelines as to who can present breed seminars?

Laurie Savoie, British Columbia
A mentorship program would certainly be a positive step. I feel very strongly that there should certainly be guidelines, concerning the selection of breed presenters.

On several occasions I have been part of group seminars where with all good intentions, people were presenting their breeds simply because they had the breed...and there appeared to be no other option.

This does no one any favors...Those continuing their education towards judging credentials...AND the presenter, knowing that they were not truly qualified, but wanting to help. The two situations I experienced were not involving my own breed, but were in my Group.
Raymond Lariviere, Ontario
I agree there should be a mentor program, but feel this is where the CKC and CDJA should partner up to develop such a program. How it would look is something I am unsure about, but is something that should be investigated.
Caroline Thibodeau, Quebec
That's a hard one. We all know people who have been in a breed for years and wouldn't know a good one from a hole in the ground. What  would the criteria be? The number of champions produced? That could be relatively meaningless, if finished on the backs of littermates etc.

I would ideally like to see mentors from a variety of sources, breeders, people who have achieved high accolades, but perhaps have not bred for one reason or another, breeder judges, handlers. Each has a unique perspective.
Marlene Ness, USA
Yes, I believe that mentor programs are needed for the sport of dogs.  Teaching, up and coming judges or even new breeders the ins and outs of the breeds with hands on experience. I also believe that there should definitely be guidelines as to who would be able to present breed seminars. After 20 years in American Cocker Spaniels, I recently did my test to become a recognized American Spaniel Club mentor.

I would think that new judges, would want to know that the person that is mentoring them is themselves a person who has had experience in their breeds and has had some sort of "training" to gain their experience.
Marcel Bourgon, Canada
This is the first opportunity for new judges to learn the correct type in any breeds, so getting it right the first time is truly very important. The National clubs should always be involved in the selection of the persons giving the study groups demonstration, as most of these seminars are spread all over Canada. The National clubs would setup the participants from coast to coast.
Larisa Hotchin, British Columbia
Breed mentorship is a very important thing – getting detailed nuances about Breed’s from those that have significant depth of broad experience in the breed can be extremely important.

Some guidelines would be useful, however, I would put a caution on putting too many restrictions. From what I have experienced, those that run Judges Study Groups usually have a very good understanding about the quality of presenters for various breeds. I do not believe that restrictions should be put on those that are running these groups. Restrictions could very easily become political or rely on breed club members. In my experience, not all breeders of quality dogs are members of Canadian breed clubs. However, broad guidelines as to who should provide ring-side mentorship could be useful. These guidelines should go beyond breed club membership, and look at overall breed history of success throughout North America.
Sandra Lex, Ontario
Interesting question. I do not believe the CKC nor CDJA have the resources to institute the mentor program. It is very time consuming. I am an accredited mentor with American Spaniel Club for American Cockers and
the Affenpinscher Club of America.

In both of these institutions there are conditions that must be met before you are permitted to be considered as a mentor.

I believe that the parent club must be the principle arbiter of who meets the expectations and credentials to be considered a mentor. They, above all, know who could meet the challenges of steering a non-personal view, and follow the standard as written by the parent club and it's interpretation. The one big issue that seems to rear it’s ugly head are individuals who feel compelled to introduce their personal views as being the
gospel.

What muddies this mentor program here in Canada are the rarer breeds, who do not have national clubs, such as the Affenpinscher, who would be at a disadvantage and could not have a published list of individuals to offer.

It's a learning curve, but one that yields benefits for everyone, including Breeders.

McThought of the week...

Best In Show, Reserve Best In Show Champion

Blue Sky’s Hudson River Hero

Needless to say…it was a BIG first weekend in Canada for Blue Sky’s Hudson River Hero, more informally known as Sully. He is sired by, GCH CH. Goodtime's Star Attraction out of Chatham's Triple Harmony at Benchmark.

Sully earned his Canadian Championship along with a Best In Show and Reserve Best In Show at the Mt. Cheam Kennel Club shows in Chilliwack, BC on February 25th & 26th.

Sully is at home in the show ring, the field or the mud – his even temperament, correct structure, and willingness to please makes for a very bright future.

This young dog in limited showing, is pointed in the US, has earned his International CH and now in one weekend in Canada is currently ranked.

Canada’s #1 Golden Retriever
#2 Sporting Dog
#10 Dog of All Breeds

Our sincere appreciation goes out to judges, Gerson Ayala and Fabricio Pastor for these awards.

Sully is handled by, Heidi Gervais and Jill Scholl. Thank you to all of Heidi's amazing team - Jill, Jaime Larkman and Shelby Eckford for making Sully's first trip north champagne worthy!
