It’s hard to believe that there are only four days left in this year's legislative session. It’s been an honor to work alongside my distinguished colleagues to make policies that improves the lives of working class Coloradans across the state. While it has been an interesting session with the split chambers, we have still managed to work across the aisle to form policy that strengthens Colorado’s middle class, ensures our small businesses thrive, and continue to promote equality for all.
I would like to thank you all for following our work and reaching out to me throughout the session to provide your feedback and opinions. While the session might be over, I will still be working hard for Fort Collins during the interim. Please feel free to continue to contact me with your questions and concerns. I will be in Fort Collins throughout the summer and fall, my number is 970-215-3063 and my email is joannginal52@gmail.com. Please feel free to reach out if you would like to meet!

Family Leadership Training Institute
Last week I was pleased to welcome the CSU Extension’s Family Leadership Training Institute to the House floor. The Family Leadership Training Institute (FLTI) is a 20 week community class in Fort Collins that teaches youth and adults valuable civic engagement and leadership skills they need to make a positive impact on their community. The Extension FLTI is particularly unique amongst programs of its kind in that it includes youth in its programs and believes that strong civic engagement and leadership skills benefit community members of all ages. Thank you all for taking the time to come down!

HB 15-1327: Limiting Proxy Marriages
On April 21st the bill that I co-sponsored with Representative Roupe to limit proxy marriages in our state passed unanimously out of the House. Colorado is the only state where proxy marriages can still occur. Counties in Colorado are seeing people from throughout the United States and around the world traveling here to get married. There are three other states who allow proxy marriages, but only in regard to military and contractors stationed overseas.
The availability of proxy marriages in Colorado poses a threat to our national security, makes Colorado particularly vulnerable to human trafficking, and jeopardizes youth by allowing individuals under the age of 18 to be married to both foreign and domestic adults. By limiting proxy marriage accessibility to only our men and women serving in the military or as contractors, HB 15-1327 will make Colorado a safer place for all our residents. This bill passed unanimously out of the House and is continuing on to the Senate.

Fort Collins Cat Rescue and Spay/Neuter Clinic
Finally, to end on a fun note, I recently attended an informational volunteer breakfast with the Fort Collins Cat Rescue and Spay/Neuter Clinic (FCCRSNC). The breakfast involved an exchange of information in which I had the opportunity to teach attendees about the legislative process while they taught me about all the good work they do for animals in Fort Collins.

The FCCRSNC is a limited admission, adoption guarantee shelter that is committed to finding forever homes for every feline in their care. Additionally, they operate the only truly low cost spay/neuter clinic in Fort Collins, proving their commitment to our community and the animals in it.
