From The Capitol
We started the week with the House Democratic Press Conference. The theme was “A House for All Virginians. I spoke on ways we can ensure that everyone enjoys the benefits of Virginia’s outstanding economic growth. It’s time to support Virginia workers with a living wage and better protections.
HB 2604 was my only bill that was heard this week. HB 2604 is known as the “One Gun a Month” bill. The bill, if passed, would have reinstated Virginia’s previous law to limit the purchase of hand guns  to one within a 30-day period. Similar legislation has been entered each year and, like this year, they were all unsuccessful. Along a party line vote, my bill did not pass.
Every other Wednesday, Governor Northam and his administrative team have breakfast with members of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus. This is our time to discuss our legislative agenda one-on-one. It is always a positive discussion.
Once again, I’ve been named to the Rules Committee. The committee meets at the call of the Speaker. The committee is comprised of eleven Republicans and six Democrats. Some of the most consequential bills and resolutions are assigned to this committee.
I was glad to stand with NARAL Pro-Choice, Virginia advocates. We joined to express our support for reproductive freedom.
It’s always great to see visitors from Hampton!
Things are moving quickly and as you may have noticed that this newsletter was supposed to have been sent last week. After crossover, things will slow down just enough for us to catch up. As always, it is an honor to serve as your voice of the 92nd House District. Be sure to follow this legislative session as I take action at the capitol!

All the best,
Delegate Jeion (ja-WAN) Ward
