Dear Bigs, Littles, Family, Friends, and Partners,

We love the above photo of Little Brother Justin and Big Brother Cole exploring the beautiful island of Oahu together. Do you have a match photo to share? Please send to your Case Manager and we will feature in our next newsletter. There is nothing better than seeing photos of our Bigs and Littles out and about having fun together! (speaking of fun - take a look at the flyer at the end of the newsletter for info about our California Pizza Kitchen fundraiser on Tuesday, October 20!)

From October 1 - 15 we will be holding a special competition for Bigs and Littles  - the winner will be featured on our annual Thanksgiving mahalo card and the drawing sent to hundreds of people. Here are the rules:
  1. Create a drawing of you and your Big on a white 8.5 x 11 piece of paper – you can use markers, crayons, colored-pencils, etc.
  2. The drawing must include the word "thankful" somewhere
  3. Take a photo/scan of the drawing and text/email to your Case Manager by October 15
  4. Make sure not to fold the paper - we'll send you a self-addressed envelope to mail your atrwork
Best of luck to all our matches and happy October!

Dennis Brown
President / CEO

Last month we had the opportunity to match four sisters! Uncle Lexter came to us looking for female role models for his four nieces he is raising...and we found perfect matches for each! Pictured here is Big Sister Tomeka and Little Sister Leandrea, Big Sister Kim and Little Sister Laurelle, and Big Sister Miranda and Little Sister Leizhel. (Not pictured: Big Sister Marisa and Little Sister Lovelle)

Congratulations to Kauai Big Sister Summer from Waimea High School for being awarded the Big Brothers Big Sisters EIH BRAH scholarship. The scholarship will assist with expenses for Summer’s new adventure as she attends the University of Hawaii Manoa this fall. Summer served as a Big Sister at Kekaha Elementary School, where she was instrumental in impacting the lives of keiki for three years! We wish Summer well in her future endeavors! Here’s a photo of Summer and her family on the day she received the great news! Special thanks to all those who donated to this scholarship.

On Tuesday, September 22, the Maui Afterschool Mentoring Program kicked off our series of volunteer trainings starting with Lahainaluna High School. We are excited to work with our amazing returning Bigs and stoked to have some motivated and engaged volunteers to add to our ohana. In the training we discussed expectations of being a volunteer, child safety and potential signs of child abuse, and how to build relationships with Littles. It was fun, informative, and got everyone in the mentoring spirit!

On September 24 the Finance Factors Foundation hosted a golf tournament benefitting Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawaii, which raised $20,000 to support our mentoring programs! We are so thankful for everyone at Finance Factors for their partnership and support of our keiki!
We are proud to recognize Maui's Big Brother Edgar for his TWELVE YEAR commitment to his Littles Lawrence and Gregory (pictured on their first match meeting and then at their graduation). Thanks to the Old Lahaina Luau they received tickets to the luau, which is where the match spent their very first outing together.

A hearty shout out to the Hawaii Lodging & Tourism Association for presenting Big Brothers Big Sisters on Kauai, Maui, and Oahu with grants through the Visitor Industry Charity Walk events! We are grateful for your partnership in continuing to provide mentoring services for Hawaii's keiki. Pictured here is Kauai's Case Manager Nicole Cowan receiving the award from HLTA’s President Mufi Hanneman, Chairperson of Kauai’s VICW-Marc Brennor and HLTA-Kauai Chapter President Christina Gabriel.
Mahalo to Peggy Sue’s who partnered with Maui Classic Cruisers to host the 20th Annual Peggy Sue’s Classic Car Show on Sunday, September 27. All proceeds from the event benefitted Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maui.

We are so thankful for everyone who used their Maka'i Card and supported Foodland's GiveAloha campaign through the month of September. Mahalo!
The Hui Noeau Visual Arts Center invited our Maui team to their monthly Family Friday event. Little Sister Mackienze and mom Deanna made beautiful wired jewelry with sea glass and beads. Thank you for inviting us back to your event!
