Aloha Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawaii Ohana,

March was a BIG month! On Kauai, the "Super" Bowl for Kids' Sake raised a record $30,000 thanks to many generous donors and sponsors. On Maui and Oahu, Whole Foods hosted three "Community Support Days" and donated 5% of all sales to our organization. Nerium International and #LiveHappy helped us celebrate the International Day of Happiness and Nordstrom Hawaii chose us as one of the beneficiaries of their Ala Moana gala opening! See below for a list of great events coming up, and if you are looking for something to do on Oahu tonight, come join us at Chuck E. Cheese from 4-9pm where 15% of all sales will be donated to help us create more life-changing friendships for Bigs and Littles.

Want to be featured in an upcoming newsletter? Send us a photo at bbbs@bbbshawaiii.org so we can share your smiling faces and adventures!

Island Updates

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hawaii Island
Selfie alert! Here is our newest match Little Sister Naiya and Big Sister Hannah hanging out in downtown Hilo for their first outing. They had a great day watching a parade in Hilo and walking around the Hilo Farmers Market.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu
Big Brother/Firefighter Chris Shim invited Oahu matches to tour the fire station and everyone had a blast! Bigs and Littles watched demos using the Jaws of Life, learned how to extinguish a fire, and even got to shoot the hose! Mahalo to all our firefighter role models out there who help keep us safe. Pictured here are Little Brother Pookela and Big Brother/Board Member Jeremy Forest.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kauai
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kauai held their 7th Annual “Super” Bowl For Kids Sake on March 5th and it was a HUGE success! We not only met the fundraising goal of $25,000 but exceeded it by raising $30,000! The lanes were sold out and nearly 250 participated. Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. was there to help kick-off the festivities with the Kauai Regional Board and Kauai Community Federal Credit Union won the 2016 Team Spirit Trophy!
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maui
Maui Bigs and Littles visited the Ko’ie’ie Fishpond on the first day of Spring Break and learned about the different aspects of the Loko I’a (fishpond) and the Hawaiian culture/traditions. They also learned an oli (chant). Thanks to the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, we also got to explore exhibits about our sacred whales and participate in hands-on activities in the visitor center before heading home. What a fun day!

Mahalos

On Tuesday, March 8, Nordstrom hosted their opening gala and chose Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawaii to receive half of the proceeds! BIG thanks to Aloha United Way and the entire Nordstrom Hawaii ohana!
BIG MAHALOS to Whole Foods Hawaii for selecting Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawaii to be the recipient of their Community Support Day in which we received 5% of the whole day’s sales. Kahala, Kailua and Kahalui on Maui all participated in this fundraising event to raise BIG bucks for our program. Mahalos to all who supported this event in some way, like Little Sister Gina and Big Sister Joey!

Our Annual Bowl For Kids Sake Mahalo Party will be held on Wednesday, April 5, in honor of our top individual fundraisers and companies. We extend our greatest appreciation to the many companies, supporters, and participants for their unwavering commitment to Kauai’s keiki. Our Top Sponsors include Mark’s Place, Contemporary Flavors Caters Catering, Grove Farm, IBEW Local 1260, Earthwork’s Pacific, Kaua’i Community Federal Credit Union, Alaska Airlines, Syngenta and many more! Please click the image above to appreciate all of our many supporters!

Live Happy and Nerium International helped spread joy on the International Day of Happiness on March 20 by creating a "happiness wall" at Ala Moana Shopping Center. Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawaii received $1 for every messaged posted. Mahalo to Nerium and the #livehappy team for their unwavering partnership!
At the beginning of March the Maui RC Modelers invited our Community-Based matches to take turns flying their very nice remote control airplanes using “buddy boxes.”  This allowed the club members to maintain control while giving the matches access to flying time. The ongoing flying demonstrations by the experts were amazing and we are so grateful for the opportunity to participate!
Mahalo to Marcus Mariota for donating an autographed poster of his Sports Illustrated cover to auction during Kauai's Bowl For Kids Sake event. The memorabilia sparked a lot of interest and bids and ended up raising another $450!
California Pizza Kitchen invited Junior Chefs Zanae and Skyler to help introduce new menu items in their Hawaii restaurants on the Sunrise Show on March 8. You can try some of these new dishes on Tuesday, April 26, when CPK will be sponsoring a day to benefit BBBS at four locations Oahu. Simply click the flyer below to download and turn it in when you’re paying your bill so BBBS will receive 20% of your purchase!
Big Island School-Based programs enjoyed part one of a two part Art-to-Go series before starting spring break this month. We are all looking forward to finishing up our group murals in April and displaying our work! Special thanks to visiting artist, Alex Sanchez, of the Honolulu Museum of Art.
Gerda Tom from Aloha Shoyu and Aloha Bottling presents a $2,000 check to help fund scholarships for high school mentors who will be attending college in the fall!
The John Young Foundation donated tickets to the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra performance featuring violinist Tessa Lark on March 20. Little Sister Crystal and Big Sister Lauren had a blast and were even able to meet Tessa!
