Maui Bigs and Littles were invited to visit the Kahului Fire Station in February. They sat in the Hazmat and Rescue Fire trucks and learned about the different tools firefighters have available in case of an emergency. The best part was being able to use the fire hose to shoot water at targets!

BIG Mahalos to Natalie Uehara and the Castle HS Dance Ensemble for sponsoring a Hip Hop Dance Class for matches on February 20th. Thirteen matches learned a new dance routine and cheered for each other in dance competitions. It was a fun activity for all who attended!

Alyssa Vea was one of our mentors on Kauai for four years and last year’s School-Based Big Sister of the Year. She is now attending her first year of college at Colorado Mesa University where she is studying social work and shares with us that she is applying to volunteer at a homeless youth shelter. We are so proud of Alyssa’s commitment to continue serving youth…way to go Alyssa! Here’s a photo of Alyssa receiving her Big of The Year Award with her Little Brother Kolai last year.

Mahalo to Maui Arts and Cultural Center for donating ten vouchers for matches to see shows throughout the year. Big Sister Heather and Little Sister Kahea really enjoyed seeing “Opposing Forces,” a hip hop, breakdancing show put on by five B-boys.

KAUAI - March 5: 7th Annual Super Bowl For Kids' Sake (open to all!) Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kaua’i is holding their 7th Annual “SUPER BOWL For Kids' Sake” on Saturday March 5, 2016. Please join us when our Honorable Mayor Carvalho Jr. and a surprise celebrity guest bowls the first ball to get the festivities under way. KAUAI - April 9: Annual S.T.E.P.S Parent Child Fair (open to all!) at the Kukui Grove Center from 9am-1pm. This is a wonderful event for families, providing information and education on transitions for our children, as well as hands-on activities and entertainment. We will be sharing information and presenting PCAH poems & artwork created by the matches in our School-Based program.

MAUI - March 5: RC Flying (matches only) at Maui RC Modelers (off Mokulele Highway behind drag strip) 8am-12pm. Take turns at RC Flying with direction from experts. “Buddy boxes” will be set up to eliminate crashing. End the morning enjoying demonstration flights by some of the Maui RC Modelers Club Members. MAUI - March 16: Ko’ie’ie Fishpond Visit (matches only) at Kalepolepo Park, 10am-12pm. Come learn about Hawaiian fishponds, the Hawaiian ahupua’a system, and life within the fishpond. We will be able to get a close look at the Ko’ie’ie wall that is being restored. Picnic lunch to follow. Please let your Case Manager know by February 26th if you would like to attend. Bus transportation from our office in Wailuku will be provided.

OAHU - March 8: Watch Big Brothers Big Sisters on Sunrise - Hawaii News Now as we partner with California Pizza Kitchen to introduce new menu items.
OAHU - March 12: Fire Station Visit (matches only) arranged by Big Brother and Firefighter Chris Shim, 9:45am-1pm including lunch. Limited to 20 matches.
OAHU - March 23: Kailua Whole Foods 5% Day - shop at Whole Foods in Kailua and BBBS will receive 5% of all sales for the entire day!
OAHU - March 26 - Makapu'u Light House Hike & Picnic (Holomua matches only) Join us for a 2.0 mile hike at the Makapuu light house, with incredible views of Oahu’s southeastern coastline, including Koko Head and Koko Crater. If someone is not comfortable hiking, please join us for the picnic and talk story after the hike. Details to be announced, but probably meet at Castle High School at 10am. OAHU - May 7: BBBSH Community Work Day in the Ho’okua’aina Lo’i (open to matches and families) in Maunawili (Kailua), 8:15am-1pm, including lunch. Limited to 40 volunteers.
OAHU - May 21: Visitor Industry Charity Walk (open to all!) at Ala Moana Beach Park-McCoy Pavilion, complimentary continental breakfast at 6am, walk begins at 7am. BBBS is a recipient of this Charity Walk and will be recruiting anyone and everyone who wants to walk. The more participation we get, the more money we will raise. OAHU - July 9: Locations Foundation Movie Day (matches and families) - Each year the Locations Foundation generously sponsors a summer movie day for Big Brothers Big Sisters and Boys & Girls Club. Join us to watch “The Secret Life of Pets” - more details to come.
