"The need for fun in friendships is clear, but the response of a friend to your inner failings is immensely valuable. A friend responds with compassion; understanding that we are all in the struggle of embracing ourselves where we are and allowing ourselves the space to grow. A mentor is that kind of a friend, empathetic, kind and imperfect." ~ Jill Matro, BBBS Hawaii Vice President of Programs

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu
New Board members had the opportunity to get to know our mentoring program at Ali'iolani Elementary by participating as judges in "Shark Tank: Junior." Bigs and Littles were tasked with creating an invention to make the world a better place using random items (water bottles, balloons, pipe cleaners, cotton balls, paper, etc) and then presenting their inventions to the panel.  Special mahalos to our "sharks": Dennis Brown, Jill Matro, Jeff Mullis, Akili Jones, James Chan, Jessica Chiu, Jeremy Forest, and Wes Fujimoto.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maui
Big and Littles in Maui's School-Based mentoring program have been having a blast creating mystery animals! Each match was instructed to draw various portions of a creature - the only catch was, they couldn’t see what their partner had drawn until the very end! Matches learned about sharing, and how creativity can be utilized communally. Here is Little Alyssa and Big Nikki's creation, Princess Abigail, a fish princess of the ocean.

Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel hosted the Big Game Golf Tournament in Kona on February 7, helping us raise over $1,000 to support mentoring programs on Hawaii Island! Mahalo to Mike Quanan and the team from Hapuna Beach and our volunteer, Ka'iu Lum-Ho, for dedicating her time and support!
Bigs and Littles on Kauai express their appreciation to Alaska Airlines for their support of the upcoming  7th Annual Bowl For Kids Sake event taking place on March 5 at the Kaua’i Bowl. Over 250 sponsors, donors, and businesses will “huddle up” for this year’s “SUPER” Bowl For Kids Sake!  Stay tuned to see information on our top sponsors, photos and event highlights to be included in next month’s newsletter!
Thanks to a grant from the NFL Foundation, two matches were able to attend the Pro Bowl!  Here is Big Brother Warren and Little Brother Link thoroughly enjoying themselves at the game.
Maui Bigs and Littles were invited to visit the Kahului Fire Station in February. They sat in the Hazmat and Rescue Fire trucks and learned about the different tools firefighters have available in case of an emergency.  The best part was being able to use the fire hose to shoot water at targets!
BIG Mahalos to Natalie Uehara and the Castle HS Dance Ensemble for sponsoring a Hip Hop Dance Class for matches on February 20th. Thirteen matches learned a new dance routine and cheered for each other in dance competitions.  It was a fun activity for all who attended!
Alyssa Vea was one of our mentors on Kauai for four years and last year’s School-Based Big Sister of the Year.  She is now attending her first year of college at Colorado Mesa University where she is studying social work and shares with us that she is applying to volunteer at a homeless youth shelter.  We are so proud of Alyssa’s commitment to continue serving youth…way to go Alyssa!  Here’s a photo of Alyssa receiving her Big of The Year Award with her Little Brother Kolai last year.
Mahalo to Maui Arts and Cultural Center for donating ten vouchers for matches to see shows throughout the year.  Big Sister Heather and Little Sister Kahea really enjoyed seeing  “Opposing Forces,” a hip hop, breakdancing show put on by five B-boys.
Mahalo to Hard Rock Cafe Honolulu for treating Big Brother Daniel and his Little Brother Raiden to a meal and concert (it was the day before Daniel’s birthday). Thanks to the Hard Rock team for always being so generous to our matches!
