Valentine's day at Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy
Dear Parents and Guardians,
With Valentine’s Day approaching, I wanted to reach out and say that we know this is always a highly anticipated day at school and the act of giving and receiving valentines from friends is a simple, yet meaningful act.
In past years, I have noticed and questioned the amount of candy that generally comes to school on Valentine's Day. While I know it's a very fun holiday in that way, I have been struck by the unhealthy relationship such celebratory days bring between our children’s health and wellness policy. I have received a lot of feedback from parents about candy at school as well as the faculty and we believe that it's time for us to make a decision on where we stand.
As part of that conversation, we would like to direct that the students not bring in candy or gifts to accompany their valentines. The valentines themselves are worthy offerings. We find that students who don’t have these extras, (due to personal preference, busy schedules, finances, etc.) can feel that their valentines are somehow ‘less than’ worthy. This decision supports HMCRA’s commitment to health and wellness for our students.
I realize that this announcement is coming close to Valentine’s Day and that some of you may have already purchased candy or small gifts to accompany your child’s valentines. If this is the case, we do want to celebrate that wonderful thoughtfulness, and ask that you and your child have a conversation about alternative options for the candy/gifts. Can you brainstorm some things that you could do with the items? Can they be saved for party favors? Also, please make sure that, if your child is bringing valentines that are non-candy/treat related to school, he or she has one for each member of the class.
Thank you for helping us focus on what makes Valentine’s Day special, inclusive, and healthy at HMCRA.
Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you, too!

HMCRA has teamed up with Castro Cares, a community-based organization, for a sock drive to benefit community members living on the streets or who are in transition. Dry socks are critical for people living at risk, so starting Monday, February 6th, the HMCRA student council members will be collecting socks in a large box during morning circle. The sock drive will last through the month of February and donations will be collected weekly by our Castro Cares partner.
Let's get this box filled with socks and support our community!
