Hi Adventure Philanthropists!

Last week I received a letter from a reader, Dmitry, with the subject line that read: “Great book - travel is good, making friends is better.” I couldn’t agree more!

I’d been email chatting with Dmitry over several days before he revealed that he’s giving a copy of my book Adventure Philanthropist: Great Adventures Volunteering Abroad away on his travel gadget blog. Nice!

Here’s your chance to win a *free* book! You have nearly 3 weeks left to enter, but why wait? Enter today!

p.s. My favorite travel gadget? The iPhone skin / stun gun. Gotta get me one of those!

And now for the articles this week:

New Post  > How Does Our Garden Grow?

I’m always looking for volunteering adventures in my own backyard, so I jumped at the chance to pitch in at Oakland’s Gardens of Lake Merritt. The themed gardens comprise 7 acres of flora, often called “Oakland’s Hidden Oasis.” We had a bit of fun getting a little dirty—and you can too!

Fav Post  > Open Wide for Dental Tourism

I’m big into dental hygiene and go like clockwork every 6 months. I mean, have you seen my teeth? They’re big. 17 teeth show per smile. I counted once. Well I just got two cavities (due in part to my shift to all-natural, no-floride toothpaste.) Maybe next time I need to head overseas?

Photo of the Week > Cuban Pride

I dig this mural of the Cuban flag and their revolutionary leaders. It was painted as part of a community art project that we visited on the outskirts of Havana. The neighbors were tired of the trash lying around, so they took it upon themselves to recycle it all and create a neighborhood filled with found art. My type of people!
Yo – It’s the weekend so I’m having a little party: a “Staying Put Party.” Celebrating my almost / trying incredibly hard / nearly there / living-in-one-place party!

Hope you will be toasting this weekend with all your friends too!

See ya on the road,
