  • Holiday season is here! If you’re looking for toys or games to improve your child’s gross motor skills, look no further. Below are toys approved by a physical therapist to increase strength, balance, and coordination.

  • Strength: How well the body moves its muscles and carries a weighted load.
    • Mini trampoline: Jumping is an excellent way to strengthen leg muscles.
    • Pop-Up Tunnel: Crawling is a full-body strengthening exercise that targets leg, core, and arm strength.
    • Slide: Stepping up the stairs of a slide improves leg strength, as well as, balance and coordination. Core strength is challenged when maintaining an upright posture sliding down.
    • Hula-Hoop: A timeless classic. Using a hula-hoop targets abdominal and core strength and improves coordination and reasoning skills.
  • Balance: How stable the body can be without falling.
    • Tricycle or Bicycle: Keeping a midline posture while pedaling and steering challenges dynamic balance.
    • Scooter Board: Whether sitting or laying on the tummy, a scooter board engages core muscles to improve stability when the board is in motion.
    • Stepping Stones: These are a fun way to improve balance and can easily be added to an obstacle course or a game of The Floor is Lava.
    • Rocking Horse: This challenges balance while sitting and rocking and when mounting/dismounting the horse.
  • Coordination: How well the body works together with its parts and surroundings.
    • Light-Up Toys: These can be as simple as light-up instruments or as complex as light-up dance mats. Both improve motor planning, sequencing, and timing.
    • Balls: Throwing, kicking, and dodging balls are practical ways to improve coordination skills.
    • Twister: Identifying colors, following verbal instructions, and completing a motor task simultaneously help with coordination.
    • Bowling Set: Setting up the pins and knocking them down with the bowling ball can improve hand-eye coordination skills.
