Sound of the Xity starts its fifth edition tomorrow!

Sound of the Xity (SOTX) gets underway this week – it takes place from 27 April - 2 May in Beijing, China. The organisers have announced the schedule of its programme, which is made up of two days of conference sessions including special sessions on export and a focus on Latin America and three days of showcases, all of which allow delegates to discover the intricacies of the Chinese market. Hotel scam alert!

An important message to WOMEXicans everywhere: the scammers are on the loose again!

Last week, we received a phone call from a company called 'Exhibition Management Service' purporting to represent WOMEX who claim to offer delegates the best deals on accomodaton. Please do not be caught out! This company (they go by many names) are not accociated with WOMEX and are known scam artists. WOMEX will never phone you with accomodation offers.

We are taking legal measures against this company, but due to their enigmatic nature, we do not have high hopes of stoppnig them. Please let us know if they contact you. You can find WOMEX's official accomodation advice on our website and that of our local partnersTo find out more details about this scam, see the whocallsme profile of the number that contacted us, or the Scambook profile of 'Exhibition Housing Management'.

Atlantic Music Expo finishes another great event

The fourth edition of Atlantic Music Expo wrapped up on Thursday after a week of high-quality networking, conferences and showcases, and it was the biggest yet!

520 delegates from 37 countries descended on Praia, Cabo Verde, for Atlantic Music Expo 2016, which included a trade fair of 73 stands and a showcase festival of 32 artists. See our photo album of the event at the the WOMEX Facebook page, and a selection of videos from the conference in the YouTube playlist.

2016 saw the last AME with Mario Lucio as Minister of Culture, who wants to concentrate again on his career as musician and artist. We wish him all the best for his new projects and hope to see him again soon! Regarding AME's future, the new governement has expressed a strong will to continue this major event for the country of Cabo Verde. See you next year, 10‐13 April 2017 in Praia!

For more information about the Atlantic Music Expo, see their website and or their profile as part of the WOMEX World Tour.

Did you miss the wonderful performance by Ági Herczku & Band on the Club Duna stage at WOMEX 15? Well, never fear! The concert has now been released as an album, entitled Live at WOMEX Budapest, along with four bonus studio tracks, on Fonó Records. We want to thank Ági Herczku and all involved! Find more info about the album on Fonó's website (Hungarian).

This month has seen the deaths of two giants of African music: Getatchew Mekuria on 6 April and Papa Wemba on 24 April. Getatchew was the 'Negus of Ethiopian Saxophone', and Papa was a pioneer of Congolese rumba and the movement of La Sape. We were lucky to have Papa Wemba perform for us at WOMEX 10. Click the links to hear a couple of our favourite tracks from the two, from YouTube. They will be sorely missed.

Conceived as part of WOMEX 16 in Budapest, Hungary, the latest release from Piranha Records is a tribute to the country's most famous (or infamous) song. Hungarian Noir is dedicated to the so-called 'Hungarian Suicide Song', Szomorú Vasárnap (also known as Gloomy Sunday), and the release features covers from all over the world, including the originals by Pál Kalmár and Billie Holiday. Hungarian Noir is released (fittingly) on Friday, 13 May – find all the details and preorder now with Piranha Records.
