What's Ahead? Tell Us and Win a Free Registration!

We're right back into the swing of things back at Piranha HQ in Berlin, and we're already looking ahead into the future. So much that that is a theme of this newsletter: the impact of Brexit on world music, the future of the world music album, the future of WOMEX – help us improve! – and even our plans for this month.

And if you do want a little glance into the past, relive the WOMEX 16 Closing and watch show performances recorded live at WOMEX 16 on YouTube – you can find nine live videos so far (including latest addition Bixiga 70), and there are many more to come over the next weeks!

Kind regards from Jim and Paul, on behalf of the whole WOMEX team.

By Popular Demand: Ivan Duran Presents Calypso Rose

As part of the WOMEX 16 Awards Ceremony, Artist Award winner Calypso Rose was presented her statuette by her record producer and foudner of Stonetree Records Ivan Duran – his speech honouring her was so good it left us all in awe, and several people asked whether it would be available to listen to again. So here it is! You can hear and read his speech on virtualWOMEX, and you can also watch footage of Calypso Rose's performance in Santiago de Compostela on YouTube.

WOMEX Talks Brexit

One of the most talked-about topics at WOMEX, both in the Conference and the Trade Fair, was the issue of Brexit and its impacts on the world music community at large.

Naturally we were interested too, so we conducted some intereviews with key UK community members. You can watch our interviews with Vanessa Reed and Lisa Whytock and Eluned Haf on YouTube now, and listen to the Brexit conference session itself in full on virtualWOMEX.

Can You See the Future of the World Music Album?

One of the most popular conference sessions at WOMEX 16 was 'Is There a Future for World Music Albums', chaired by Patrick Lee-Thorp of Templit Entertainment. The session aimed to discuss if and why the album as an artform deserves to continue, and how to revolutionise the field going forward. Lee-Thorp made a great round-up of the findings on his blog, and we also have the full audio of the session available to listen at virtualWOMEX – you can get that WOMEX feeling again whenever and wherever you are!

Were there any conference sessions at WOMEX 16 that you really wanted to attend, but couldn't? Or did you see one that inspired you so much you'd love to hear it again? Let us know! Email with any sessions you'd like to hear (or hear again) and we'll do our best to put them online.
