WOMEX World Tour Journeys the Globe

There has been lots of WOMEX World Tour activity in the last few months! April saw the Atlantic Music Expo in Cabo Verde and Sound of the Xity in China – both world music expos that are the most important in their regions; and at the end of May was the fifth edition of Classical:NEXT in the Netherlands, the international meeting for the contemporary art music world.

Situated in the wonderful surrounds of Praia, Cabo Verde, the fourth edition of Atlantic Music Expo (AME) hosted a bustling open-air trade fair and conference programme, and 32 showcase performances from Cabo Verde and around the world. A total of 520 delegates, exhibitors and media from 37 countries were in attendance. The 2017 edition will take place 10-13 April 2017.

Here is what some AME attendees are saying: “It is by far the best organised event in Africa. The delegated selection as well as the artists is great and diverse.” Grégoire Pluchet, Universal Music West Africa; "AME became a must attend professional event, which every year contributes to develop cultural exchanges.” Mamou Daffé, Festival sur le Niger/Arterial Network, Mali. Many more media impressions from AME can be found on their Facebook page.

The Sound of the Xity (SOTX) expo and conference in Beijing, China attracted around 1000 visitors and for the second time, SOTX also had its own stage at the Strawberry Festivals in Beijing and Shanghai, where it showcased 40 international artists from 12 countries to enthusiastic thousands-strong audiences.

Classical:NEXT, which has just passed, saw its largest edition yet, with over 1000 registered delegates decending on Rotterdam. There were 1,200 professionals from 45 countries in attendance, as well as 155 performing artists (not including the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra!). You can see a run-down of the event, as well as impressions and numbers, in the final Classical:NEXT 2016 press release. Classical:NEXT 2017 will return once again to Rotterdam, from 17-20 May 2017.

Upcoming Stops on the WOMEX World Tour

The next stopover for the WOMEX World Tour will be Primera Linea in Havana, Cuba, from 14-17 September 2016. This debut edition will be part of Habanarte and its main location will be the newly-renovated Gran Teatro just opposite the Havana Capitol. Our local hosts Endirecto have just opened their new main office in the building of Havana’s legendary Abdala Studios, and kicked-off the local countdown with a big party on the last Saturday of May. If you want to join us for Primera Linea, take a look at the event's website. More information on Primera Linea and Circulart, Medellín, Colombia, 11-13 November 2016, will follow – see the WOMEX World Tour at womex.com for more info.
