Hello Again!

Greetings to all and welcome back to From The HealthShrink! In honor of National Women’s History Month, we’re excited to bring you our March, 2016, Women’s issue.

It took some time, but at this point in my life, I have a feeling of pride and respect being a woman. I’m relaxed at not having to be perfect. I only need to be the real me and do my best in life to
grow, flourish, and, ultimately, to give back good things to the world. I wish this peaceful and complete feeling for all of us, yet I understand it’s not easy.

With the world’s obsession on our bodies from the time we’re girls and the messages given about how we’re supposed to look to be attractive, (skinny), no wonder it’s challenging to believe and trust in ourselves. In truth,
we’re wonderful just as we are and we’re actually much more complex than our bodies alone! In this note, have a look at the video below displaying the strength and beauty of a larger-sized, female yogi. I think you’ll agree, she’s awesome.

And, there’s more exciting news to share! In What’s New, among other things, you’ll see we’re celebrating our 1st year anniversary of The HealthShrink website! What a journey it has been with
Rafael DeArce of dRC Online this past year writing, designing, and putting together the site which is ever growing and evolving. In honor of this special anniversary, I’m offering a 50% discount on our Initial Discovery Meeting (a $75 value!) during the entire month of March. To learn more about this meeting and why it’s important, click here.

As March is the month for female pride, let’s not forget about 2 women who fought hard their entire lives to bring equality to us. Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton not only rocked the boat but exploded the whole navy yard when it came to women’s rights! In This Month’s, National Women’s History Month review, you’ll read about just some of what they did to make a difference and to alter history/herstory. Neither allowed society to define them nor their capabilities. We can gain much from their modeling.

In our Feature Article,
Stop the Attack on Women and Fat, I note the difference between the fat in our body and the fat we eat. The word is the same, and the appearance may be the same, but eating healthy fat does not cause our body to gain fat. I know, it doesn’t sound like it can be for real. Read more about this fascinating discussion below or right here.

Since I’m so convinced about the benefits of eating healthy fat and the wonders of a tasty treat, I think you’re going to be quite pleased with this month’s Nourishing Recipe, Susan’s Luscious Cacao Fat Bombs are in fact just what they promise. They are the bomb, luscious, loaded with healthy fat and protein, and they are richly, (though not sinfully), swimming in dark chocolate! They’re also super easy to make and don’t require baking. I’m about to blend up another batch as soon as I’m done with this column. (I love having something to look forward to!)

There you have it my friends in a fairly large-size nut shell. I hope you enjoy this month’s Women’s issue. As always, if you have any questions or comments, please let me know here. Until next month,

All the best in good health!

What's New?

Feb.  13th: Gotham Volleyball Season Opener – Yesiree folks! I’m at it again as a player and Captain! Tryouts were held on 2/6 and hundreds showed up. It was a long and exciting day. Everyone who tried out did their best while all of us Captains also did our utmost to put together competitive and fun teams. We even decided on Broadway Shows as a theme for our team names. My team? Wicked, of course, Defying Gravity! And, we played Wicked-ly well, reigning victorious in the season opener. Tons of fun and healthy hormone release makes my day!

Mar.  15th: The HealthShrink’s Website 1st Year Anniversary – It’s amazing to think that a year ago, Rafael De Arce of dRC Online and I sat down to discuss my new Program and my need for a beautiful, informed, and user-friendly website. We signed a contract, rolled up our sleeves, and embarked on a journey together to develop the best website we could. It’s a year later now and I have to say, I’m super thrilled! The site has evolved into something I couldn’t even have imagined way back when. And, it’s still ever growing and a wonderful work in progress. Have a look by clicking here and let me know your thoughts. I'd appreciate any and all feedback. Thanks!

PS – I’m so excited about how the website has turned out, that I’m going to pass on some of my joy to you. Throughout the month of March, I’m offering a 50% discount on our Initial Discovery Meeting (ordinarily $150!). To take advantage of this offer, simply click below.

Mar. 17th: St. Patrick’s Day – To all of our Irish and Irish wannabe friends out there, happy holiday! Whether observed religiously or culturally, St. Patrick’s Day always features a grand slam of a parade in NYC and elsewhere. Dress in green, grab a friend, and cheer on the bagpipers! Come to think of it, I wouldn’t mind having a bit of the luck of the Irish myself.

Mar.  20th: Spring Equinox- I’m ready to spring into action with the arrival of the Vernal (spring) Equinox! Scientifically speaking, the March Equinox, (there’s also a September Equinox), is when the sun shines directly on the equator and the length of night and day are nearly equal. For me, it signals longer days, more sun, (meaning more access to super important Vitamin D), increasing warmth, and renewal. Plants come back to life and bloom their gorgeous colors, and animals are born. I’m looking forward to taking it all in and celebrating spring, 2016!

Mar.  27th:
Easter – To Christians around the world, time to rejoice and Happy Easter! But, you don’t have to be Christian to have fun on Easter. This is the time for the super fun Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival showcased along 5th Ave in NYC! Moreover, more fun, with Easter comes the Easter bunny, colored eggs, jelly beans, the Easter egg hunt, and, of course, chocolate bunnies.

And, HURRAY for:

Mar.  30th: Good Fat, Good Health – Presentation at Gotham Volleyball – This is my third time back talking with the Gotham Community in their Health & Wellness seminar series. Always focused on the do’s and don’ts for Optimal Health and Body Re-shaping, this time the focus is on body image, societal pressures, and healthy fat consumption. I love getting out and spreading the healing word!

Looking Ahead:

NAVEL EXPO: Featuring the World’s Greatest Healers – LIVE!

May.  14th: New York, NY – The Millennium Hotel

May.  15th: Long Island, NY – Long Island Hilton, Melville

Hey everyone, I’ve reserved a booth at both these health expos. I’m super excited to meet with people in-person, listen to their situations around health and body re-shaping and talk about how The HealthShrink program may be helpful for them to work through issues and get on the right track! If you’re free, come on by to say “hello”, chat, and meet a whole slew of talented healers.

This Month: National Women's History Month 2016

I think it appropriate to take a moment to thank Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony who worked together for 50 years, (1851- 1902), on behalf of American women to have the same rights as men. Their National American Woman Suffrage Association, started in 1869, focused on getting women the right to vote. And, both of these women worked really hard together for equality for women beyond having the right to vote. Other causes included allowing girls to study the same subjects as boys, equal pay at the work place, and permitting married women to maintain control over the money they earned, (previously a woman’s salary went to her husband).

Let me note as well that neither of these women were typical bathing suit beauties. Thank goodness, that short-coming, (note sarcasm here), didn’t get in their way of making huge and important changes for women in the USA. I’m terribly grateful for what they did and for how they persevered. I’m equally relieved that there were fewer social media pressures on them, (compared to today), with regard to having to have a perfectly shaped body and the struggles and lost time that go with that.

Feature Article: Stop the Attack on Women and Fat
by
Susan D'Addario, The HealthShrink, Certified Eating Psychology Coach

Attention all women: Do you feel pressured to be thin? Do you fear that no matter what you do to be a good person, smart, a leader, or sexy that you just won’t be taken seriously unless you’re a size 2? Or, perhaps even worse, that you won’t be considered attractive, healthy or loveable by the masses? Are you feeling hurt, frustrated, and angry at not being accepted as you are?  For who you are inside? If so, you’re not alone.

For decades, there’s been and continues to be a full-fledged assault on women in this country to acquire a Beach Barbie shape whatever it takes, no matter the consequences. Depleting ourselves of precious nutrients through calorie deprivation as well as working out to exhaustion are equally applauded by both men and women. All for the sake of wearing a size 4 or less and to be accepted, irrespective of our genetics and body type. These hurtful thin-is-in messages shown every day, throughout the day by any and all types of media are so rampant and pervasive that they’re now trickling down to very, very young girls. It’s true. Girls 4 years-old and younger in record numbers believe they need to diet. Really? Any wonder why there are so many of us with eating dis-orders? The messages go so far back.

Susan's Luscious Cacao Fat Bombs

(Recipe adapted from Yuri Elkaim)

This dessert is full of healthy fat that promises to nourish our brains and every cell in our body! It’s tasty, easy to make, and requires no baking. The original recipe included 8 dates which was far too sweet for me. I’ve made these wonderful bombs using just 2 dates to offset the bitterness of the cacao. I’m aware my taste buds at this point are less sugar-seeking than most. If you find 2 dates aren’t sufficient, add more 1 at a time.

Remember:
  • Eating fat does not equal gaining fat on our body as long as the fat is healthy.
  • Our taste buds have been hijacked by the food corporation which adds sugar, and lots of it, to everything we eat and drink. They’ve made us into major sugar cravers.
  • Taste buds replace themselves every 7 days. If we cut back on sugar a bit each week, we can absolutely retrain our taste buds to prefer less sweetness. This would indeed help with sugar cravings and in our overall good health.
  • While eating healthy fat is healthy, adding sugar to that fat renders it unhealthy. This sweet fat is not in our body’s best interest. (Please refer to our Feature Article Stop the Attack on Us and Fat for more information.)
