2. Ground breaking blood test for cancer arrives in Leicester

Participants of the world’s largest trial of a revolutionary new blood test, Galleri, which can detect more than 50 types of cancer often before symptoms appear, will be starting to arrive for their appointments outside Tesco’s in Hamilton, Leicester, from next Monday (16th May).

Selected residents aged 50-77 registered at GP practices in Leicester, who have received a letter from the NHS inviting them to participate in the NHS-Galleri trial, are urged to book their appointment and take part before the mobile clinic moves on to its next destination on 16th June.

The Galleri test checks for the earliest signs of cancer in the blood. The NHS-Galleri trial, the first of its kind, will assess how well the test works in the NHS and whether the technology can be used as a tool to screen people with no cancer symptoms. The trial aims to recruit 140,000 participants nationally, including those who have now signed up in Leicester. The trial team is keen to attract participants from different background and ethnicities to ensure results are relevant for as many different people as possible.

The NHS-Galleri trial is being run by Cancer Research UK and King’s College London Cancer Prevention Trials Unit in partnership with the NHS and healthcare company, GRAIL, which has developed the Galleri test. Anyone whose results indicate a possible cancer will be followed up urgently in the NHS.

3. International Nurses Day

This week we marked International Nurses Day (12th May) to recognise and honour the important contribution of our nurses. The theme of this year’s International Nurses Day was Nurses: A Voice to Lead - Invest in Nursing and respect rights to secure global health.

The Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Clinical Commissioning Groups (LLR CCGs) would like to thank all the nurses working in LLR for your contribution to our local healthcare system.

Dr (Hon) Caroline Trevithick, Chief Nurse and Executive Director of Nursing, Quality and Performance, at LLR CCGs, also praised our nurses:

4. Health and Care Together Spring edition

This week the Integrated Care System (ICS) in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR) issued the second edition of the quarterly magazine, Health and Care Together.

The magazine is primarily aimed at the 70,000 plus health and care staff who work across LLR, as well as anyone else who might have an interest in our work.

Through it, we hope to bring to life the principles of our partnership: closer working across and between health and care organisations and the integration of services in ways that puts patients and service users first.

Young people share experience of loneliness during Mental Health Awareness Week

In the lead up to Mental Health Awareness Week, Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust’s YAB (Youth Advisory Board) took some time to discuss the topic of loneliness and how it has touched their own lives.

The group, made up of young people from the Trust’s child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS) and representatives from the City Youth Council,  wanted to do something to help other young people so produced some top tips, including what helps them when they’re feeling lonely. You can view a poster of the tips here: https://www.leicspart.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/YAB-top-tips-for-loneliness-MHAW22.pdf or check out the reels and stories on LPT’s social media.
