Your weekly NHS update for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland

4th March 2022

Hello and welcome

Welcome to 5 on Friday, our stakeholder bulletin for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
Emerging situation in Ukraine

Firstly, we would like to express how shocked and saddened the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland CCGs are by the events unfolding in Ukraine following the Russian invasion of the country.

The scenes we are witnessing on the news every day are deeply upsetting and unsettling. We recognise this will particularly be the case for anyone who either has relatives or friends in Ukraine or Russia.

These are uncertain times, but we are sure we all stand together in hoping for a peaceful resolution to these current troubles and an end to the unfolding humanitarian crisis.
About 5 on Friday

3. ‘Help Us, Help You’ diagnose cancer earlier

NHS England & NHS Improvement has launched a new phase of the ‘Help Us, Help You’ campaign taking a radically different approach to detecting cancer earlier for patients, when it is easier to treat.

The campaign aims to address the barriers to people coming forward early by encouraging those who have noticed something in their body that doesn’t feel right and are worried it could be cancer to contact their GP practice. The campaign will reassure people by highlighting that most people who are referred for tests by their GP find out it’s not cancer and that finding out sooner is always better.

The key message is don’t let the thought of cancer play on your mind, if something in your body doesn’t feel right contact your GP practice.

New survey data reveals that while the majority of people knew catching cancer earlier makes it more treatable, over two fifths (42%) said they would ignore symptoms, wait to see if anything changed, look for answers online or speak to family and friends before seeing their GP.

The campaign is running across TV, radio, and social media in March and is the first ‘Help Us, Help You’ cancer campaign to focus on tackling the ‘fear’ of cancer rather than specific symptoms.

4. Clinical Research Facility in Leicester awarded £4.1M

Local health researchers are celebrating after it was announced that the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Leicester Clinical Research Facility (CRF) based at University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) NHS Trust has been awarded £4.1 million over the next five years to carry out early phase clinical research.

The NIHR Leicester Clinical Research Facility (CRF) is one of just 28 CRFs that have been funded in England to expand early phase clinical research delivery in NHS hospitals.

CRFs support the delivery of early translational and experimental medicine research. This means they aim to find out the correct dose for a medicine, how often the medicine should be given to remain effective, the effects of said medicine (including side effects), and how the body processes the new medicine as it travels through your system.

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Leicester CRF was launched in 2017 following a grant of £1.4 million. This latest award, which represents almost a three-fold increase in funding, will cover the period to 2027.

In the latest bid, UHL has partnered with the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN) NHS Group, to increase both the number of clinical trials and the opportunities for people over a broader geographical area in the East Midlands to take part in research.

5. NHS Digital Weight Management Programme

Today marks World Obesity Day, a day to raise awareness of the risks of excess weight but also supports the conversation on how people living with obesity can manage their weight.

Almost 100,000 people, including NHS staff, have signed up for the programme so far and taken their first step to achieve and maintain a healthier weight.

NHS staff living with obesity can sign up to the free 12-week programme, without having to be referred by a GP or pharmacist. The programme offers dietary advice, physical activity guidance and support.
